Harrington on Hold'em

So lately I have been playing a lot of MTT and been getting pretty deep into a lot of them, I even won a $5 6-Max tourny for almost $1300 a couple of weeks ago. This is about where I have been going out in tournaments lately, as you can see I am making it into the money but not making really any big cashes.

What I'm really wondering is if buying Harrington on Hold'em or any other poker books would help me get past those spots and make deep runs in to tournaments more often. I am a pretty good player, I started with $100 in about July of last year and have withdrawn about $1900 from cash games and tournament wins and have about $400 in my bankroll about now. I've never actually read any books or studied poker much though, the extent of my studying has been reading some of the articles on this forum and posting in the hand analysis forum.

So anyway I just want to know if the Harrington on Hold'em books are worth the $70 or whatever I would have to spend on them. I probably could've saved myself some typing by just asking that right away but whatever :p

Will they make you place better? I'm not sure. Will they make you a better player? Will they help you to understand a lot of fundamental concepts in NLHE? You bet they will. Are they worth the $70? Absolutely. But check your local public library, I was able to find them there and save the $70.

:) I have also found the complete set by Harrington and many more by Sklansky, Navarro, Mike Caro, Doyle Brunson and many others including videos on Half,com. for prices less than 1/2 retail including shipping.. you might take time to check out this source..:smile:

I read four other books before reading Harrington on Hold'em Volume I. Despite having a pretty good grasp of the game, I picked up a ton of new things. I really liked the way the books were put together,with a lesson, followed by examples and explanations.

Then I re-read Volume I and picked up things I had missed.

I bought Volume II after that and read it twice as well. I think Volume II is what you need to read, but I think you'd get more from it if you read Volume I first.

You sound pretty solid to begin with, but I think they will pay for themselves over time. IE, purchasing the books will be a +EV move.

I wish I knew Half.com had poker books earlier, Ark. I's have saved a lot of money. Thanks for the heads up. I'll go there next time.

You might want to also check amazon.com I was able to find great used copies of alot of the best poker books out there including Harrington for like 50 to 70% off.

I'd go with both of these points as well. Get both vol 1 and 2 to start (get vol 3 later). You will get a lot out of both of them. And however you go about it, do actually buy the books. There's something to be said about having them on hand 24x7. And when they are your books, you can also deface them with notes. :)

From your post and what you are looking to accomplish at this point....

My suggestion would be to go with one of the Video Training Services. They are very good at getting good players to the next level by watching actual play and the rationale behind the play.

Harrington is great and all and you should read it...But Im not sure if its on point for you right now

What JD says.

I've taken a lot of poker books out of the library and own very few, and the HOH series is most of them. Not so I can deface them, but so I can pick them up and reread sections now and then to re-cement them in my mind.
