How many people have noticed that online poker has a major difference from live poker in their chip denominations?
What I'm talking bout is how online you can make bets like $679, $2,239.48, etc. But, when you play live you can only make bets that the chips in front of you can possibly make.
And live tourneys don't have $1 chips or 1 cent chips lol.
And then as the blinds go up, live tourneys will take away the smaller chips and use larger chips that are just small enough to mke a small blind.
For example once the blinds go to $100/200 the $25 chips will be removed. SO your bets would have to be in increments of $100.
Now I know some ring games are $1/$2 and you would have $1 chips there, but you wouldn't see someone buying into a ring table with $21.79. It would be $21 or $22.
So I would like to open a opinion discusion please. So here goes...

Question: Do you think online poker bets should be more realistic like brick and mortar casinos or do you think the online way is a new and better option?

Question: Do you think this helps people prepare for real world tournaments negatively, positively or has no affect?

Please share your opinions and this isn't about anyone being right or wrong because something that is good for one person's playing style isn't necessarily good for another's.
Good luck on the felts and thanks for reading and hopefully contributing to the discussion.

The difference isn't significant IMO.

Let's say I have $3,000 in chips
If blinds are $50/$100 and my smallest chip is a $50 so I can only make bets in increments of $50.

Online I can make bets in increments of $1, so I cab bet $51 or $76 or whatever.
always
However, with only $50 chips I can make a bet within 25 chips (half a small blind) of the amount I could bet with 1 chip increments. Sometimes it'll be on the upper side, and sometimes it'll be on the lower side.

Considering that some bets will be a little higher, and some will be a little lower it sort of evens out. Plus when you add the fact that people play for stacks on occasion and stacks are limited (an all-in is an all-in for the same amount no matter what was bet on earlier streets), it evens it out a bit more.

So I guess, in a ring game it could matter a little, because you can make a few extra dollars (half a small blind, minus the equity he has, so not much). In a tournament people play for stack more, so it's less likely to matter and is just about no difference when people get short.

slide sux

About the odd amounts that online sites allow a player to make.I believe it is because some sites use a slide-bar,to make make your bet amout.I have had problems, getting it exactly where I want it to be.Seems I can never get the slide-bar on exactly 100 or 200 or 300...it always gets close, but not exactly. This is the reason I make bets that include change.Like I trying to bet $100,and my slide-bar will only let me bet $106.67....crazy,but thats as close as the crazy thing will get to $100.

I prefer live play to online play. They are different. My experience has been that there are more big hands in online poker than live play. For some reason the "random card generator" program used by poker sites seems juiced. To become a better player I think you need to be able to play live: keep track of the size of the pots in your head, calculate your outs and odds, know the proper amount to re-raise, know what the other stacks are in relation to yours, etc. We get a lot of help from poker software telling us this info. Finally, we need to incorporate visual clues and tells that help us play the other players in a live game. This being said, I believe that online play should simulate brick and mortar play. You will become a better player. Don't be the player who keeps forgetting to put out their blinds or know when to act. It's embarrassing in the real world.

I say a bet its a bet whether ist an even bet or an odd bet...But online gives the poker sites the option and the software does all the math for ya as in real life a lot of people would be dumb founded trying to figure everything out so its just easier live to have even bets.

you dont have to use the slide bar (on full tilt)
you can type in the amount you want to bet.

I never thought about it before, but now that you mention it, you are right,
you can only bet combinations of physical chips.

Interesting but not really going to make much difference as the blinds and minimum raise amounts always ensure that the bets are going to be appropriate for the level.

And people in live games often like to make unusual bets like adding a smallest chip to their bet.

ha, well you get those clowns that bet 499 and the like, but to me it appears they do that either to be a clown

or to make their bet visually appear larger ... whoa look at all those chips, nevermind a bunch are $1

personally, i never look at the virtually represented bet ... only the amount, i would imagine everyone just looks at the amount, so it's just a donk thing

then again, like everything in poker ... if betting 499 gets you a table image that you're going for, well then hey all's fair

well generally it is better, you dont have to count your chips :)..and your opponents can't hear you even if you are screaming to drop their hands when you are bluffin :)
-Q1:yeah you have right,it should be more realistic,ok it's really a nonsense to bring at the table like 21.79$ as you said...
-Q2:when we talk about online poker and live game on the other side we talk about two totally diferent worlds...that's my opinion ;)

I don't think it matters.

Live games are organised that way for purely practical reasons - counting chips takes time and counting tiny denomination ones takes up more time than counting high denomination ones. Plus you have to physically fit all these chips onto the table.

In terms of the way the game actually plays I don't think it makes any difference whether you bet $193.76 into a $300 pot or if you just bet $200 and I certainly don't think having to bet in whole numbers would be a real setback to anyone who's going to play live after having learned online. Non-issue IMO.
