Rebuy tourneys are crazy until the first break...if you have plenty of $$ and plan to rebuy alot...then you'll fit right in..its kind of like a freeroll.
However, if you just lay low for that first hour, try not to rebuy and play really tight poker you can usually make a true profit. The add on is worth it unless you are a huge chip leader. I like to have around 10k chips at break...should be enough to get you in the money at least...Good Luck!

Expect a 1 dollar re-buy to be just like a 3000 player free-roll people will be playing trash and spending money in re-buys like crazy.
There are a couple of reasons for this, one is chip building some people have big bankrolls and will go all-in with any hand for the first half or more just to get a lot of chips on the table. Then near the last 10 minutes before the rebuy is over either tighten up and collect chips of just go all-in and hope to get lucky.
This is more common in the 3/5 and 10 dollar tourneys but it can happen in the 1 dollar tourneys as well. Usually in the 1 dollar tourneys people are just plain loose during re-buy hoping to just get lucky.
My best advice is set a limit, 2 to 4 re-buys plus add-on if you spend more than 6 bucks maybe your just in negative swing and shouldn't be playing. I've turned a few around after spending more than I should have but more often than not I do better if I just start out winning and don't have to stress.
During re-buy play tight, use POSITION, identify the gamblers if you hit the flop challenge them, play only premium hands and try to see the flop cheap with small to medium pairs.
After re-buy until the next break survival is key, stay TIGHT, keep using position with premium hands and again spend time observing and taking notes on the other players and how they play. There's still a lot of donk play until the 2nd break.
After the 2nd break play your solid A-game try to stay at least averaged stacked move up if you can survival is still key.
If you can make it to the next break REAL POKER will be played in earnest. TAG in EP and LAG in LP, use your notes on who to bluff and who to stay away from steal what blinds you can and if luck is with you you migjht make the final table.

Poker tournaments are poker tournaments. Multi-table, single table, rebuy, or shoot-out. There is one priority, and only one. Survive. This means that the first hour of ANY poker tournament should be devoted exclusively to the BIG starters. AA, KK, AK suited. Period. (Unless you're in the blinds and can see a "free"/cheap flop.) The maniacs are going to be feeding the pot when their small pairs and paints get busted. Let them. The percentages don't change just because it's a rebuy tournament. 44 or AJ is still a stupid all-in.
When I play a rebuy, especially a micro-entry rebuy like $1, I'll buy in and immediately take the first available rebuy. I'll then lay low, often only playing one or two hands, if any, for the first hour. Then I'll take the add-on at the first break. So, I've got three bucks total invested. I haven't squandered chips and rebuy money chasing trash, and I know I'm going to outplay 75% of the surviving field after the first break anyway. Let the donkeys build the rebuy pot with their loose play for the solid players like you to reap at the end of the day. I love it when the dead money makes a ton of rebuys and doubles the payouts that they have no shot at ever seeing anyway. Play just as tight in a $1 rebuy as you would if it were a $300 cash buy-in. You'll be way ahead of the field, and when the rebuy dust settles, you'll still be at the table. Which means you have a shot at the money. Simple, but effective.

Be prepared to rebuy a couple times at least, and if you're still in at the break, always take the addon. And beware the all-in every hand crazies unless you've got premium hands, then play back at them. I've seen players spend $100 in a $5 rebuy tourney trying to suckout and build a chipstack.
