Depends on all sorts of stuff - most prominently, it depends on exactly how much time you're spending playing poker.

At various points in the past the amount of time I spent playing poker has been a strain on my relationship with my wife. If the other person is important to you then you've got to learn to see their side of things. And you're probably going to have to compromise on the amount of time you spend playing if you want to keep them in your life.

If the other person isn't important to you then... well, that's a different discussion.

Yeah, good question..... Girlfriends vs Poker. Ive had some troubles in the past.... whilst I was spending lots of time playing poker.

If there was one thing I learnt it was not to play for money that matters to you if youve just had an argument about poker. Nothing worse than going deep in a tourney to have your lady come and hang round the computer and start up again that youre still playing poker.....

I gave up trying to explain that once you are good enough that you can consistently win at poker, but that learning takes time.

I did find myself waiting till the lady is in bed before beginning a session or waking up early to play. Like Oz says, it will depend on how much time you play. I was trying to get 3 or 4 hours a day in. Im lucky to get a 1 hour session before bed these days.... winters over, working hard everyday.... Im playing to relax these days and hopefully grow my tiny rolls. GL with yr lady......

I did kind of fall off the horse though after my 2nl attempt failed. Gone back to small or turbo mtts now.

My wife is happy that ive hardly played much poker the past 2 weeks, it results in more time with family and catching the latest tv shows you enjoy.

I used to get a lot of grief from my wife about it a few years back. To be honest, I never found a way of properly convincing a non-playing female that it was a worthwhile investment of time and effort.

The situation only changed when I began winning serious money. These days, she is very well aware that poker pays for our family to have extra holidays, eat in good restaurants etc., and nobody with more than one brain cell can object to that. She understands now that it`s my second job and needs the same focus, dedication, and time allocation as my day job.

So, the only real effective advice I have is - win and show her the cash. That works. :)

or explain its important to you and if she isnt ok with you having hobbies then you need to reexamine the relationship,

I mean frankly if a girl tried to stop you playing anything other than poker everyone would call her a control freak

My wife is very understanding with my poker playing.Seeing as I'm a MTT player if i decide to play a tourney i can be tied up for betwwen on average 5 to 10 hours. She is cool with me playing as long as i am still doing the family stuff and paying he the right amount of attention.I also play in a weekly live league with 2 of our sons.Which quite often ends in me coming home fairly full of cider1!!!!:D

Depends on how much time you spend playing at the expense of everything else. Also depends on whether you're winning or losing imo.

Yep it's all about having a good balance, you are probably playing too much and/or losing money and that's why she is giving you shit.

Do you play MTT or cash? Cash is way more flexible, you don't have to sit there chained to the computer for hours on end.

You my friend need to start making some money :)

My wife never bitches about poker, mainly because once she bitches about it, i gently remind her about the various holidays we have had, and the lovely gadgets that surround her are complimets of my hobby.

LOL - this must be where I've gone wrong. I keep spending my winnings on boring stuff like the car insurance bill :p

To the OP, once you can show her some money and as long as you aren't neglecting her or your family and other responsibilities it shouldn't really be an issue. Hell, even if you're losing money yet keeping a good balance between poker and the rest of your life it should be fine... so long as you aren't going full degen.

I mean whether it's video games, drinking with friends, or whatever else you like to do with your free time if you are doing it in excess and neglecting other aspects of your life because of it your significant other is going to notice. However, in moderation poker should be no different from your other free time activities. Just explain that you set aside a certain amount of money (and time) for poker each month and that it is your hobby -- you could spend that money/time on video games instead but the difference is that with poker you might actually be able to make more money and take her on a nice vacation with the profits.

ive had experience dealing with 2 serious gfs and poker the first only had to deal with me playing online (before i turned 21) and the other one had to deal with both online and live... i found the one who onle had to deal with online was more acceptable and the other one was very negative towards it... i think this was because she associated it with casinos and any bad things that could come with that.. being said i still feel it will always become a problem unless ur winning alot or not losing alot AND not spending alot of time
