Hey guys,

I currently reside in Massachusetts where online poker is non existent and live games are hard to find. Do you think that watching live streams of good players or training sites is a solid way to learn and improve? The closest casino is 1.5 hours away but I'm in school full time and my weekends are usually spent studying. Any suggestions?

Sooo yes, of course I think those will definitely help you improve. No doubt about it, the disadvantage is applying what you've learned in an experienced way. Because applying that you've learned to navigate Microsoft office (or changing oil, or what ever example) is vastly different then learning how to 3 bet light pre flop, you need or should try and get a small community of poker playing around you. About 10-15 guys would be ideal.

You need not only the theory and practice. I suggest you find friends with whom you could play live poker and lasts for opinions on the game why certain situations have made certain moves in such a way to learn and improve?

Watching how your betters do it is a good way to improve in any skill or game or sport or whatever you choose, not only poker. It's good that you have the desire to improve considering that alone is worth it's weight in gold. I feel like the vast libraries of knowledge on the internet, specifically on the subject of poker, are greatly underappreciated and not at all well represented in the mainstream poker community. So props to you for trying to improve via watching live streams and the like. I also heavily recommend the free e-books you can find online, there are literally tons of them. Also the golden archive on this forum right here is a great place to pick up some extra advice and tips.

Cheers

Just say luck. You cannot play only by luck. You will out in 30 min or minus. If not you gonna lost a lot of your chips with a tight player anyway.

Awesome! Thanks for the replies guys

I am also wondering, are there off shore options that would allow me to play for currency like bitcoin? Is that a thing?

Those things definitely are of help, even to experienced players. But you can't find your own style without actually experimenting at the tables yourself. I'm pretty sure Americas Cardroom accepts Massachusetts players. If not, try pureplay.com or clubwpt.com as alternatives. Heck, if you can, try all three.

Funny you mention that. I once tried to teach a six year old to play poker, without the gambling aspect of it. Her family was outraged as if I held a gun to her head and demanded she gave me all of her Halloween candy. I just dont see the harm in learning poker at a young age, minus the gambling part.

Watching can help but u won't retain everything. Watch them and compare what they did to what u would do. Tonka is really good and Jason Summerville isn't bad to watch either

Hello school boy!
I suggest to you read some books about poker and played on your phone in any poker App. After wild you can download any VPN program (google it) it will help you play online in your area .
P.S. don't rush,step by step,take your time.
Good Luck

I started playing poker very late in my life. I'm 30 years old, and I hardly knew a thing about the game when I started 4 years ago. Alot of the skills I had developed throught my life are extremely valuable, and essential to my live game. There was an accumulation of life skills which I had obtained, and this game allowed me to get paid while doing what came naturally. I think creatively, as well as deduce, and I enjoy doing certain mathematical equations on the fly. I learnt how to trust my intuition, and occasionally take risks. I believe in myself, enjoy learning, and keep an open mind regardless if I win. I put hours into understanding the way the games played, the probability, and statistics, and the various ways to build your hands, and the cards play out. There's no formula to guarantee success. I've seen pocket aces loose to 3-5 offsuit. I once had pocket tens that flopped Quads, and watched everyone try and bluff me off the pot drawing dead. I've chased gutshot draws which I sometimes hit, and sometimes I missed. Just take it as it is. You win some, you loose some, but always remember to try and have fun. Don't rush, play within your means, and with time you'll surprise yourself. All the best!

Yes,reading pooker books, watching vids, participating in forums such as CC, watch tutorial vids, etc, will help improve your knowledge of the game. However as many of the above sated need to be able to apply the knowledge to an actual game to see the benefits. So if you can get a handful of friends who are willing to play some live games that would be great, would give you the experience you need and also you would be able to apply the knowledge you gain. Yes, It's the best way to learn actually, but you still need to put your skills you learned to use. Why not play online until you can find a live game?

Watching the pros play may help to understand other principles and aspects, but is focused on their game play, not yours. I find more assistance reading books written by pros, rather than just watching how the pros play their games. Although both are helpful tools if understood correctly. TV doesn't show game play from start to finish, but instead a hand here a hand there, which then takes a lot of the pros plays out of context.

Watching/Streaming poker video, joining training sites, getting training software will help you improve but you will need to have some hands on to really make sure you really fully use the things that you studied. I suggest you play poker with people in your school who also play poker.
