just a curiosity question. why would an advanced player want to give advise to a up and coming compeditor? Have you found advise to be accurate in your learning experience?

stick around this forum and you will be shocked at the wealth of poker knowledge that exists here. in my estimation, we all give each other advice because we care about the game, and want decent competition.

Poker is a game where you learn from experience, the forum advice gives you the chance to benefit from the experience of other players rather than take all the hard knocks yourself

even the best players were once learning the game and as far as this poker community is concerned I am sure that the advice given is genuine and constructive and given to share their love of the game

People that visit the forum to read and learn about the game rather than just to fish for freeroll passwords are like usually looking to improve their game because they enjoy it but dont understand some aspect that isn't working in their own game

I think most the guys that give the advice remember back to when they themselves were learning

I don't think it is about competition I think they really want to pass on their experience

I have played in forum events against members who usually play at stakes where single pots are dozens (probably hundreds) of times the buy in for that event. The payouts for those tournaments must be insignificant for those individuals yet they play anyway.

The pool of players is so large that giving advice will not make a difference in the play that you actually come up against. I have yet to come across a CC member in any of the SNG or tournaments (that are not CC specific) in my online games and of course none in my local live games.

Giving advice makes you think about the situation being commented on and this improves your own thought processes for your own play. And of course if you have an open mind and get some feedback on what you write then you may identify a new tool for your poker toolbox.

It is in the human nature to share, and in the ego's of most to share their 'superior' knowledge. Add in the possibility for some tangible payback, and you have your answer.

As for the up and comer competition, we figure by the time the up and comer comes along we will have got and be gone!

Look at it this way, we are all friends here, and although I do sometimes run into CCers at games, It's very rare, so no matter how much info I share, there are always going to be less skilled players where I am at to beat and take their money :D

Also, many times in CC events we might know how each other plays, but usually it's not about the money in those, and that it only makes us better when we are thinking on many diff. levels to practice psychological warfare

This was my answer, too. You're going to get some expert advice, a little bad advice and alot in between. I try to put my best analysis forward and see how it stands. If someone makes a counterpoint, I can reassess my own play. After a whole thread of discussion, hopefully we all learn something.

Truthfully, I have learned way more by posting my thoughts to other peoples hands than I have by posting trouble hands for myself. When I post a hand I know a lot more about what was going on than I am able to put in the summary so sometimes I don't listen to the analysis as carefully as I should. But when posting an analysis of someone elses hands as there is no context to the previous plays or reads I am required to more carefully think about what to say, then you add the pressure of not wanting to sound stupid here, it can be a very eye opening experience.

I post well thought out responses to people's questions, because when I ask a question, I'd like a well thought out response as well.

SteveG hits the nail on the head. Teaching makes the teacher a better player. It keeps your mind focused on the game more from an objective perspective. It also helps you formulate theory in a kinetic fashion. It comes from personal experience out to a source (the student) and back to you again. Like a mirror the student reflects YOUR game back to you.
I played with some very good players in Vegas and they were always quick to discuss why they played certain hands and asked why you played your hands a particular way after the tournament. You also build bonds with fellow combatants. That taught me a lot about live play. But you yourself must be open to it as a student of the game as well.

There are few professions where the competitors help each other improve and poker is one of them. Musician do it all the time, so do professional golfers, it makes it more of a community.

Remember there are no teachers, only senior students.

You ask why an advanced player would help others. Where do you think he got the skills from ?

If the best players kept all their knowledge to themselves ( I m thinking Harrington and Brunson mainly ) then no one would ever be a challenge to them and life becomes pretty lonely at the top all on your own.

They passed on their hints and advice to people. Those people are now experts themselves, and they ( remember back to when they needed help ) pass it on to the likes of us. And its our duty to pass what we have learnt onto others.

+ 1

also I have three startegies that I took the time to write and asked nothing in return, It's just that when I was a begginer I looked for help to and mostly got it here at CC, so why not pass on the torch!

I can honestly add this fact. I've read the books, watched the videos, googled information etc etc. My game has benefited more from being a CC member than anything else. As people said, we're in a friendly poker community here, most people do genuinely want to help others. Also if you help someone, most times, they remember that and will help you further down the track if you need it. Speaking with people in similar experiences and working through situations is the best way.

Most importantly, the best way to learn is to teach. If you comment on someone's hand history you have helped them a little but you have helped yourself a lot. When you have thought about something enough to explain it to someone, that is when you have truly learned it.

That's why I post - because I have noticed a large difference in my profits in the week since I joined. :)

It`s our home game. We are playing with friends for a laugh and the money doesn`t matter.

When I am in a $5 buyin CC tourney, I am delighted to see Irexes or AlienGenius at the table, it all adds to the fun.

However, if we were playing for serious money, I wouldn`t be so keen to meet those guys, nor they me. It`s like the one is business and the other pleasure.

if you give advice someone may disagree and that is when the real meta cognition begins, when you get a debate or discussion going about a aprticular hand or something is when you really start learning.

As for being worried about giving advice to your competitors, whenever i hav emet a CC in my usual game its always alot of fun and a psychological battle and then you get the bragging rights if you win and really test your skill against other skilled opponents.

The thing is, helping someone else helps yourself a lot as well. They always say you know you understand something when you can explain it to others. But especially in the HA section it helps me think about all the tough spots. There will be days where I don't have a really tough decision, but look at the HA section and you can see the tough decisions from a ton of people. And of course we all have more to learn. It's not like some people are better and can't learn anything from anyone else.

So it's not a case of experts helping beginners. We have people all over the place and we all have something to learn from each other.

From a new member, I believe he was really trying to ask why it would benefit him to remain. I think the fact that he is asking points to a player who may do well at future analysis of the game.

Agree with most points raised here.

I really should start posting hands for analysis too.

Also I think it spurs you on when you have people asking for help one day, then making a final table or having a nice win the next.
