Greetings card chatters so I have a couple of general poker questions about online compared to live poker play so after spending the last few months learning to play poker online at micro stakes and being honest have no real success iv been looking at local pub leagues and games at the local casino pub leagues being my first to help me get a better understanding of poker as I’m self taught and this has lead to me having some questions I’d like answering

1 is there more variance in online poker compared to live like I feel when I play online I lose a lot on the river in fact recently I had kk get called all in when the flop was useless obviously I called to lose with kk not only once but 3 times in one tournament I mean that’s pretty mad

2 what’s it like going to your first live game will people pick up on that fact and attempt to take advantage also I’m guessing there’s a lot more social interaction in live games and there fore a lot more players trying to get into my head wold I be considered an ass if I went with my hood up and headphones in so I don’t have to respond

3 are micro stakes a good place to learn poker because I feel like I have learnt the fundamentals however the time for rewards is slow to say the least that’s if you don’t take a bad beat or 2 first

P.s the large chip stakes 12k starting plus sound well to die for after playing with 1.5 k starting stake average

1. You just see so many more hands online it only feels like it. Be psyched you saw KK 3 times haha.

2. Nah you should be fine. Just follow the action and act in a timely manner.Kinda goes back to question 1, live NL can be kinda slow

3. Yes. If nothing else you learn to adjust and switch gears. You see everything at micros.

1) Online only feels like it has more variance bc the game (and therefore hand total) goes by very quickly. Live is literally a slowed down version of the same numbers playing out.

2) Most live players at low stakes (like most online microstakes players) do not catch onto players’ tendencies very quickly if at all. Even when they do, like make a comment about how tight/loose someone seems, they don’t always adjust accordingly. And yea, don’t wear a hoodie and headphones. Just play your game and adjust when there’s a good reason for doing so.

3) Microstakes are a great place to learn bc you don’t lose too much money doing it. I’d say playing with good players at mid stakes is the best place to learn, though, bc you see less variance and better play overall.

You can probably play 4 or 5 (if not more) hands online for every live hand.

Ahh that’s a really good point I never even considered that the reason why I expirence so many harsh beats online is because of how many more hands I get to see

Variance is variance regardless where you play. Announcing your intentions live will help transition from online to live. Micro-stakes are great place to learn from.

Hi Tommy, From my point of view even If we play more hands on line,

1. I will say On line has more variance that live poker. My argument based on the Dealer. On live Poker the dealer is human and we are looking his motions. On line who knows what random generator will bring next?

2. Your first live poker hand: you are nervous but I myself hand it better tjan expected. Is easier to read your oponents, unless they have taking Acting 399.

3. Micro stakes are not an issue on live poker, you choose how much to play. :dito:

1. I think it doesn't have any difference and I play both live & online.

2. They might try to take the advantage if they knew it is your first game. On the other hand. I have one tip - in first 15 minutes try to play based on what would you want other plays to think of you. For example, if you play very tight, you can, later in the game, try to steal blinds with bad cards with heavy raise preflopp.
