Do any of you guys who can consistently win money in low limit or higher games and tournaments still bother playing freerolls?

Not really...there's a vip freeroll at stars that I should be playing (basically a free 50k prize pool) but I always manage to forget to play.

I do because I don't have to worry about losing. I also play at sites where I have not deposited to avoid depositing.

I prefer ones with decent structures or an easy level of competition - the Australian-only ones on Full Tilt, for example, were great for a while: only 700 people were registering, and of those about 400 just sat out. So they were free blinds city. They've gone a bit downhill lately though, now they're averaging about 1000 registrations and less are sitting out.

Always found the CC freerolls to be decent too, though the time difference with daylight savings is stopping me from playing them at the moment.

But the regular ones with thousands of entrants and tiny prize pools? Ain't real enthused about them :p

we do get alot of our very good players who do play the freerolls . they play for the pride (and prizes)of making it to the top of our freeroll leaderboards and to socialize with the new members . check the roster at the next one you may be very surprised . :)

Free rolls have some similarity to re-buy tournaments, imo: crazy early play, and if you can survive the tournament actually becomes a deepstack event where you can often have in excess of 100bb at any given time.

I dont generally play any freerolls anymore apart from the occasional forum event, and the VIP freerolls on stars on a Saturday, if i have nothing else on.

For forum freerolls, or in the instances where the prizes are sufficient to make it worth playing, yes. Most large field small prize freerolls, not unless I'm drunk.

So what about getting a big chipstack early on and then sitting out mid-tourney for a while to let the crazies eliminate each other? Seems like it's either a good time to pick up a lot of blinds or like it could have some merit to stick around til the latter part of the tourney.

i play freerolls in order to try and make a small br and turn it into a larger br where i don't want to deposit....i play bodog's free rolls a lot because they are the best money free rolls in the US...if you place first in the $1k freeroll you have a br of over $200....thats a good starting BR ya know

I sometimes play in CC freerolls, but hardly ever touch a freeroll otherwise.

I have limited time in which to play and, even though I routinely play 2 simultaneously, can rarely manage more than 8 to 10 MTTs a week. I therefore need to focus on games which offer better prospects of profit vs time. That requires larger prizes and smaller player numbers. Freerolls don`t generally offer that.

You also usually have 4,999 other people to eliminate to reach that point ;)

I think that freerolls are great practice. If you can survive that donk fest and get to know how to minimize the chances of getting out drawn by those donks, then you are set to go for low buy-in tourneys.

I find that especially partypoker has some good promotional freerolls that require you to get a certain amount of points.

When you're getting a treat of the cold deck, just go see some hands for free.

Besides the occasional one on here for fun, I really only play the Stars VIP freerolls (2 tomorrow: 1 for 20K and the other for 100K) and a 32.5K freeroll that I qualify for from another source (also this weekend). Otherwise, it's not worth the time.

They are excellent when you're first building bankroll but after a certain point, they are just tedious.

VIP "freerolls" and other such are not really free. There is a significant effort in getting those points. I consider the equivalent entry fee partial payment for all the rake generated in the games I play.

Referring back to OP, theere is no need for a freeroll for intermediate players as you suggested. The freerolsl draw in new members, while i suppose the MOTM is what is used ot reward the non frw's

I don't understand the sit out theory. To me it says I'm not good enough to play to advance.

I was thinking Man Of The Moment - but obviously that would be too sexist! :p

Handy if you need to cook dinner, though :)

NO

Ain't no such thing as a freeroll Ahab.......I consider my time at the tables worth much more than the paltry payout one gets if you dodge the donks and reach the money (usually 3-4 hours or more) in a "freeroll". I consider these type of tournaments are more costly to deteriorating your level of play as well since more than half the clowns are donking and one might start to consider slacking off on the solid play to adapt to a bingo environment. Anyways......time is money gotta go get in a few more SNG's.

Peace
