So I know that there is often a betting cap in fixed limit hold 'em.

First, in general, what is the rule (or variety of possible rules)?

For a home game, what, if any, betting cap is/should be in place for a cash game?

In a tournament or SNG, what, if any, betting cap is/should be in place?

And finally (but you can answer in no particular order) what is pokerstars' rule on betting caps for tournaments? I can only find their rule for cash games.

Thanks in advance!

The standard rule is four raises per betting round (preflop, flop, turn, river)

I cannot play on PokerStars any more, but when I could play there they used the standard four raise per betting round rule.

@HooDooKoo: is that for both cash and tournament games?

What about when the betting cap gets raised when a hand gets heads up? How does that work?

Also, what if a tournament is down to heads up or a cash game is being played heads up?

In my experience, the four-raise per betting round limit applied to both tournaments (including HU play) and cash games.

Thanks. When/where do you see the HU cap-restricton raised?

And yes, my home game I'm planning will mostly be NL, but I want to try FL, and I want to make sure I know how before I do.

I have never seen the restriction raised, and I don't think it's necessary.

Constantly playing NL Holdem, about FL I can say that can be raised 4 times the rate for the circle.

http://www.homepokertourney.com/ is a great site for helping with your home games

They have Roberts Rules and TDA Rules as well as their own HPT rule book, where I found this in the Betting and Raising section:-

3. In no-limit and pot-limit games, unlimited raising is allowed.
4. In limit poker, for a pot involving three or more players who are not all-in, these limits on raises apply:
(a) A game with three or more betting rounds allows a maximum of a bet and three raises.
(b) A game with two betting rounds (such as lowball or draw) allows a maximum of a bet and four raises. [See “Section
16 - Explanations,” discussion #6, for more information on this rule.]
5. Unlimited raising is allowed in heads-up play except in tournaments. This applies any time the action becomes heads-up
before the raising has been capped. Once the raising is capped on a betting round, it cannot be uncapped by a subsequent
fold that leaves two players heads-up. (For tournament play in limit events there will be a limit to raises even when
heads-up until the tournament is down to two players.)

Thanks, Samango! So I guess to clarify the fifth bullet point, once a tournament gets down to heads-up, then there is unlimited raising?

That does seem like it could get out of hand quickly since the two players could keep reraising 10 of their stack of 200 until finally they're all-in.

As an aside, I don't really get fixed limit, since who's going to fold to a bet of 20 into a pot 100 or 150. It seems even a big bet isn't enough to elicit a fold due to pot odds.

In limit it's generally 4 bets capped except for the river where if it's HU there's no cap and you can bet until you're all in. However, I don't think this applies on Stars, I think that Stars have the cap in place on the river
