Experience or poker education

I ounce read article on Pius Heinz who decided poker was a game of skill instead of chance.He then decided to devote time to studying the game,which he later went on to win the wsop so I'm wondering is it better to study or play,or do you need a combo of both to succeed.

Better learn more and play less , than to have a bad experience when you play a lot, but not studying and not analyze game.. Without training will not experience.

Its probably 2/3 experience and 1/3 studying

You have to find a balance.

I find when I spend a lot of time studying something, it doesn't really sink in until I've experienced it. But without the study, you can just keep making the same mistakes with little chance of ever recognizing it.

I'm really at a time when I decided to start studying watching videos of different schools of poker and read more articles.
I am retired from poker reasons to withdraw my funds, and until you can return to the tables, studying is something that will be good for me, but I really have no idea of a specific method of study, I think depends on the desire of each and the time it has more than anything

Definitely both. Your game always needs to be analyzed and you need to grow it as time goes on if you want to continue to get better. But you also need to play, and the best way to learn most times is from experience.

I think the amount of each varies for each player, it all depends on your personality and learning style.

Also, I will say this. Playing with donkeys can really hurt your game if you do it often enough, and playing at higher levels with very good players can help your game immensely.

You need to both study and play at the same time. Real experience teaches you lessons that no book can teach you. But just playing on its own is not enough. Also , you need to realise that poker is not just about skills. Just because that guy told that and won the WSOP doesnt mean he is right. You will face a lot of bad beats from worse players than you, just because they got lucky. Accept that.
Just books written by more experienced poker players will give you an information that you wouldnt have access to acquire on your own. This is why its worth it to invest some money on a book , that you will most likely get back after you read it and become a better poker player. Invest in a book that proposes to you exactly what you need.

As already stated, you need to have a balance! If you just playing and dont know what you are acctually doing, you wont win in the long-run

It's pretty wishful to think playing and studying are the only things you need to do or have to succeed, especially if you define success as winning at the big buyin tournament level like Heinz did. For one, there's a little thing called talent. There's also luck. And probably more that can be added to the list.

When you consider all the factors, success is better measured relative to an individual's potential than against an arbitrary yardstick. We can't all be like Ivey, Negreanu et al no matter how much we study and/or play.

I agree the posts above. Theory and practice go hand in hand. I suggest sir, you read first 2 books. Then go out and apply to any near cardroom afterwards.

I would like to think everyone for there input I feel like I'm gaining in wisdom and insight every time I visit CC forum.

You need a group to study with if you are to improve your game.

Signing up to a forum and being active( going through threads and posting) will outweigh any game time you might have.

I think being a member of a poker community and exchanging opinions with other(better) players is the absolute best way to improve your game.


Experience can't plug your leaks.(because you probably wont even know you have them).

read a lot of books,still do. a tons of on line play and belonged to a poker league that played at various bars thruought my city.
