existential poker question

In live poker the deck is shuffled at the beginning and so the cards that are drawn off are predetermined from that point. Is that the same in online poker or is the deck shuffled so to speak before each card is drawn or does anyone know? I'm thinking of the times I've folded only for the nuts to flop. It occurs to me though that if I had entered the hand it would have delayed the shuffling for a second or so which would have changed the order of the cards. I think this sometimes to console myself when it happens. Does anyone know if I'm right to do so?

This is a very interesting question, which I don't have an answer. Yes, in live games the cards are shuffled before the hand and the fate of the cards is established. During online play, I have no idea if the cards are dealt with the same way.

Nevermind, just read through the link in previous post. Was surprised to see how heated that thread got with KKK comparisons.

Thanks. I'll have a look at the thread. I'm not saying its rigged though, just asking whether anyone knows if the deck is shuffled randomly once or if its sort of shuffling away continuously in the ether.

So to answer my question after reading the link, if the rags I fold on pokerstars would have flopped the nuts I can kick myself but if it happens on another site I can say the result would have been different if I'd entered the pot. ☺

I referenced that thread/post because the answer to your question was already there --- not because I'm trying to bring "rigging" into the discussion.

You don't need to read the thread to answer your question. Just the single post (9192) in that thread.

Being troubled by what WOULD have happened if you'd played your rags is results-oriented analysis, which is terrible for your game/profitability. When you choose to fold your cards preflop, you shouldn't care one iota what the board ends up looking like because it's completely irrelevant. You should just follow the play of others at the table so that you get a better sense of how they are playing.

I know what you're saying and thanks for replying. The way you play means more in the long run than the actual result. So if I go all-in with rags and win that doesn't make me a winner! Honestly I try not to look at my hand after I fold it other than to see how the cards I folded may affect play. I just find its an interesting thought that whether or not i participate in a hand or how long i take to decide may affect the cards that are dealt. Other people seem to have had the same thoughts about the shuffling process before me and drew different conclusions!

Avoiding results based analysis

I have seen and felt this way quite a few times and now use it as a positive. When I see a situation like that, I remind myself that probability theory not only states that it can happen, but will happen. However, that is a result. More importantly, was my decision accurate for the whole, not the one? I have enjoyed reading Travis Steffen's, "Peak Performance Poker" and chapter 9 covers goal setting. There are several "mantras" within the chapter that deal with optimal play and "I will be decision-oriented...." is one

I am just going to take the easy way out of this discussion and agree with the signature block of "Math is Hard" I used to know calculus, now I can barely count
