Does this strategy make sense to anyone else?

I was recently playing the 9pm 5k guaranteed at UB. It's only a $1.10 to enter and had unlimited rebuys for the first half hour then a chance to double at the end of the period giving you 3000 or 6000 extra chips. The issue i have is (I've never read anything about this so forgive me if this is a documented strategy) there are always a few people at the table that constantly go all in w/ rags and have to rebuy several times, costing a buck a shot...so i've seen people rebuy like 8 times up to the end of the rebuy period. then at the end of the rebuy they double and ad 6000 more.

Heres my problem... technically when you act like that you're giving a ton of extra chips to your opponents, then at the end of the period, you have a few thousand chips, or less. Don't get me wrong...if you can actually make enough it wouldnt be that bad, but I always see these people having maybe 2-3000 chips at the end of the period add on the 6000 extra, which now makes the tournament cost you sometimes 10 bucks or more.

My strategy for the beginning is play only top hands and if they work, more chips for me, then at the very end of the rebuy period if I have less than 4500 chips, get totally wreckless and see if I can blast off or get crushed...still only costing me a buck. then right before the rebuy period ends get a double rebuy (you must have 1500 or less to rebuy) or if I bust out buy a single for 1500 then a double bringing me to 4500, then add on the double at the break giving me 10500 chips, only costing an additional 4-5 bucks, and not donating a ton of extra chips to my opponents. I always see these crazy players rebuy after wreckless rebuy then at the end of the period have 2-3000 chips (which means you can't use the rebuys cause you have more than the 1500) then only being able to add the double at the end. So what cost me 5-6 dollars costs them 10+ and they still have less chips coming back from the break. Does this make sense to anyone else.

If this helps you out, then great, or if anyone has any opinions on the matter, I would like to hear them

Well sometimes the strategy of constantly going in wont work and they'll have maybe 4000 chips at the end of the rebuy, however sometimes it will work and they'll double up a couple times and have like 15k after the rebuy period giving them a great chance to make a deep run. Both strategies are completely valid and have their ups and downs.

First off, if I want to spend $5/$10 on a tourney then I'll play in a $5/$10 tourney. That being said...

Lots of players go crazy trying to build a stack in re-buys. Lots of players know that lots of players go crazy trying to build a stack in re-buys. That means you're usually in a pot with some one who can't wait to get his chips in or some one who thinks that's what you're doing.

Bluffs won't work. Stealing won't work. Semi-bluffs become pure bluffs. Hell, it's probably a bad idea to C bet.

That pretty much leaves ABC poker. Play TAG and bet your hands for value. Try and flop sets and double through.

Always take maximum advantage of re-buys and add-ons to keep your stack as large as possible but don't go crazy based on your re-buy/add-on situation. Let your opponents re-buy while you focus on getting those chips from them.

I agree that both ways can be very prosperous in the end, personally I would have to stick with just winning rather than trying to mess with the re-buy, I would re-buy only if necessary. I wouldn't play that loose.

Plays like this are made in the 1K buy in as well. I saw the Grinder just keep rebuying in LA. I lost count. Negreaneau is also know to keep rebuying. I think the count was over 20 for 1K.

I have come to believe that all in in a rebuy is to play like shit for a while. plain and simple blow off all your agression and acks of stupidity. go nuts! and after i have done that for a while i rebuy again add on and i am set to play. play for keeps that is. i get in nice calm state of mind and i am ready to pick apart the tight asses and hit the agressive players with hammers.

also playing like a mad man in the begining will build the prize pool and add more places that pay out. plus it really pisses of solid players who have a small bank role add cant afford to rebuy. i know you have heard of playing the big stack this is playing the big bank role. sumply put if you have the money make it hard on the players who dont. its a bank role game for the rebuy period not a chip game.

Thats exactly my strategy baring in mind i dont like rebuys for the fact that it pretty much is mayhem for the first hour (normarlly at my limit) but i took a chance the other day and by keeping my normal game i did come through pretty well, i didnt cash but i came about 46th out of 1113 which werent to shabby so i agree with you Kingcurtis on this, keep it tight all the way!

re

I guess everyone has different ideas on rebuys,I prefer to get by as cheap as possible.Ive won rebuy games without ever rebuying..I guess this is my strategy.I dont mind the rebuyers adding to the pot tho...but sometimes they can get lucky

Which strategy are you asking about, yours or the goof balls? I agree with your strategy. The goof ball strategy only works if they stop at a predetermined number of rebuys. If they say ahead of time, I will make three shots at getting a really big bankroll, and then quit if they bust. That way maybe they can get way ahead early and slow down to go into the second half with a big stack. To rebuy 10 times is dumb. I don't play rebuys because of the time spent, You basically waste an hour until the real tournament starts. An exception to my rule is a money added tournament. I play all money added games.

Yeah, you can consider this strategy if you just pay 1 extra dollar, after the rebuy period, but what kind of add on is this that can be 3000 or 6000? Isn't the add on just the double of the original stack?
I've never heard about this

the reason the pros do this is because they feel their edge is huge compared to their tabel then they will go and rebuy as many times as they can in the rebuy period because they are getting that many more chips at their table so they can then extract them after the rebuy by outplaying the table. you can do some research on this but thats why the pros are always saying whether they had a good table draw or bad table becuase that dictates how they play more then the cards do. online some players dont understand this concept and its alot harder in large field tournaments because they tables condense faster causing table moving quicker their for hard to play this strategy.

Some of these guys go crazy with the rebuys and then see that they must finish very high just to break even. I don't think this is a good strategy bankroll wise.

I usually mentally discount 3 rebuys as my maximum entry fee (2 during rebuy period and one addon). Also I only rebuy if I had lost the hand due to something else than bad play.

Rebuys are mathematically a bad decision as your relative stack will be smaller when compared to the average, but you will be paying about the same price.

I think it is better to play solid and not have to rebuy. Why give away any more chips to your oppponents than you have to? The more you have to rebuy just increases the stacks of your opponents that you will have to take back if you want to win.

Understand that a big part of the reason Danny, the Grinder and others are rebuying 20+ times is to get money onto thier table. Of course they'd like to build up a big stack of thier own, but just having them at the table is the real goal.

Lets look at 2 tables at the break. One full of "crazy" all-in fools and another full of tight "nits" trying to get to the break as cheap as posssible. (Which would you prefer to be sitting at?) I'll use 1000 starting chips and a double add on at the break. 10 people to keep the math easy. I ignore the effect of people comming and going.

The table of 10 rocks has maybe 2-3 buy-ins each but a couple dropped out with out doing an add-on. Your table average would be 4500 chips or so while the tourny ave is around 7000.

What happens at the "goof-ball" table? 2 or 3 of the top ten are at your table and the table average is 10-12K. Now the better players have a nice pool of chips to draw on. It doesn't matter so much who has 'em, they're available after the rebuy period is over.

I'm not advocating 20 buy-ins, you'll need to finish 4th or better to come out ahead, but only suggesting you understand what's going on. Those pros know the advantage and you should too.

The OP has some logic to his strategy. I hope this will help clarify why. I decided that contributing a few $$$ when fortunate enough to be at such a table can pay dividends later.:D

I am gonna add....even though I am a low unit rebuy player (like most of the posters in this thread), the excessive rebuy strategy you guys are complaining about (or rather say is wrong) is actually a well accepted and profitable startegy for those that employ it

The successful, good players who use it do spend a lot to rebuy, but you will find on many occassions they are also winning or FTing the tournys where they employ this strategy..

If you can FT or Win these things then you can afford multiple rebuys

If you watch closely, especially rebuys on Stars, you will see the majority of the successful Pros utilize this strategy

At the end of the rebuy you can add 3000 for a buck or 6000 for 2...just how it is.

These are great strategies. I can't wait for my next rebuy to try some of this out!
