I am a day trader at Bovespa, in brasil, and I think that to play poker and to trade stocks are pretty much the same thing. But what do you think?

There's some broad similarities in terms of the type of personality that tends to be successful in each field, and with regard to money management.

But other than that no. The specific skill sets required are different, as are the strategies.

It's all gambling. Different game, managing how much to risk, almost the same.

At least in cards you have a small say in what happens. In stocks some politician can break wind and cause you to lose your entire future and future of 100s of 1000s of people.

I can see some similarities and they do both seem to attract a lot of the same people. But I think poker is more luck than the stock market is (as long as you study the fundamentals as well as the technicals.) I do not day-trade, but I do trade the stock market (more swing-trading and long term trades.) And just like playing good cards in poker, you can trade very good companies and still get blind-sided by something unexpected and loose a lot. But I still think the chances of that happening is a lot greater in poker than in the market.
