hi folks, well maybe the title is a bit strong, but youve heard of the way you plamotionsy is for the most part the way you go about life. u know passive person will play passive etc, so how would a really aggro sly liar play, would it make them a better player since they are horrid in life and does poker learn u to be more like them?.or does it just open your eyes to the fact that poker as in life is not a nice game its full of negative emotions and thoughts,, i suppose what im saying is poker is not good spiritually.whats your thoughts.

I believe that poker is a game and you'll play poker the way you want to. I don't bluff often, but I know how and do to great effect, doesn't make me dishonest, just means I can play a game.

It's the same as saying actors are dishonest as they are pretending to be or have something they don't

Interesting topic. I disagree with you that poker would be some kind of bad thing spiritually. The main thing is to remember that poker is indeed just a game and even though some take it very seriously, it should still be fun. Bad beats and losses are part of the game but that's what makes it interesting. Of course you get negative emotions as well along the way but every other hobby has those moments too. It's the attitude that makes the difference in the end.

I have also wondered many times why people consider poker players as liars? It's not lying, it's a game where you are supposed to do that. Think about sports as well: soccer players are lying all the time that they are hurt when they're not :D They might even hurt others physically but it doesn't mean that those people would be horrible persons outside the game. So why would poker players be? Most poker players are actually really nice people, even right there at the table.

Personality might have some kind of impact on how you play but I wouldn't give too much attention to that either. I am pretty shy in the real-world but when I enter a poker tournament, I want to ruthlessly take everyone's money :D It's true that the outcome of the game, good and bad, might stay with you for a while after the game and give you negative emotions as well but that's how it is. Poker is like a rollercoaster ride, you have ups and downs, laughter and horror. We just need to learn to enjoy the ride.

Why would a "passive" person play passively?

The logic of playing "passively" may be mostly broken, but it nevertheless seems to be an active attempt to gain control over a chaotic circumstance.

I'd say a person who lets life push them around is more likely to play as a frustrated aggro-fish.

thats exactally my point a natually passive person will get frustrated trying not to play passive, especially a newbe, overtime this can be changed or worked with, anthony holden explains this better in his book holden on holdem

Great topic. I feel it’s the opposite. From poker one learns very fast that hero likes to lie way too much and also hero believes too easy villains lying all the time.

By lying I mean bluffing too much, and by non-believing I mean calling too much.

Passive can always transform to nit, and that is very profitable in micros especially against aggro sly liar =) Passive player who calls too much and don’t learn is more about having ability to learn than passiveness or aggressiveness. In the long run both have to transform to something they are not naturally, ie balanced.

Game strat should not be considered lying but misdirection within the game is very profitable, kind of like capitalism.

I'm a believer in karma and I wonder if it also relates to poker.
Sure it's just a game but the positive and negative thoughts and emotions are still involved.
If we get joy out of bluffing and stealing all their chips.
Will karma kick in and let someone else do that to you too?
Sure, why not. It happens all the time.
So how do you avoid it in poker? I don't know. Maybe feel bad taking their chips? Or Give up your blinds to a needy player? [emoji23]

I think poker can make you a better liar, but only when practiced live. online poker lacks human interaction which is necessary to practice lying. Also, how can an opponent spot a lie ( a lie, not a bluff) through a computer screen, not even seeing the person's face.

Players in poker are represented here as a kind of scammers and liars. But we are not like that, are we? Usually, I rarely use bluff. And to sit and wait for a good card is not passivity.
