Hey Chatters,

Does chatting at the poker tables help or hinder your poker game. Or, has no effect at all.

This just occurred to me a couple of days ago. It was a freeroll, of course. Anyhoo, I was chatting with the fellows, and gals, not sure. And, enjoying myself because some of the peeps were just plain funny. But, while engaging in this verbal garb butt, I made a call of all in, that I would not normally have made.

Therefore, got knocked out, while close to the money.

But, its no fun if you can't chat and enjoy the peeps. But, if it is going to prevent one from building up a BR, is is worth it.

My BR is very small and I urgently need to build it up.

Just thought I would ask some of the more experienced players their opinions.

Thanks for listening,

mike:trytofly: :trytofly: :trytofly:

You can chat it up if you can do it to gain info, and have a more enjoyable time. If it's distracting you though, and causing you to make poor decisions, then obviously you need to cut the gab down.

I'm a chatter box normally at the table. I do it to get information and build rapport with people that I can usually use later.

In my own experiences playing, I do not generally chat while playing poker. Right now its distracting me from playing good hands.

However, I do not feel as though it takes away from play, in fact its a great way to make friends online. Though, I haven't made many friends yet, I will get better at chatting, and it will become less distracting and more useful for strategies and friendships.

Hello, I am a new member but playing poker over 5 years. Honestly, I believe the chat at the tables can mess up a little, if you use it improperly. An example is when we beat an aggressive opponent and he starts offending the players, it takes away your concentration. But of course we can talk and enjoy the game talking to players, cautiously and without showing any kind of player you are, as well as at the poker table, there's conversation, there are laughs, then knowing how to use it is a good tool.

Talking is a great aspect of the game. When playing in freerolls especially newbies tend to talk kore frequently. You can use chatting just to meet friends, or to help your game. It may also hurt your game. Here's an example of each scenario:

To help your game: One may use misleading raging comments to pretend one is tilt. Usually people read that angrier tilt players, therefore their range will be maximized, and you will be playing out of position. However, to use this to your advantage, you can keep the same range and keep betting seemingly unrational bets (but in reality you are trying to induce a call from your opponent). This will result in your opponent playing out of position, and ultimately to their defeat. This best works vs. weaker emotional players, or chatterboxes (usually found in lower stake tables).

To hurt your game: One may lose focus while chatting. This usually leads to one calling more out of position, which is quite similar to the opposite of the last example. One may also give reads while chatting. Smart poker players take any clue they can get to find a read on their opponents, even on a psychiatric level. This is why example 1 may be an asset to your game, because your deceiving your opponent, leading onto him false deductions.

Hope this helped, good luck at the tables.

It's up for debate in my eyes really. This is saything that you have no issue playing your cards correctly while chatting.. Some say that you kind find information on people others say that its just distraction. This being said, if you find it helpfull to do then I would continue, if not.. obviously don't.

I find chat to be distracting, even when I'm not involved with the conversation. Too damn curious for my own good, which is actually one of my leaks that I seem to constantly battle with.

My opinion is that chat awlays help to understand the thinking of the online player there is no other way to recieve information for your opponent. At least for me it works

It does not help. It's a distraction and more time on frustration.

IMO chatting increases tilt, it can work for you and against you. Usually when I see someone talking crap, I push their buttons in the chat just by typing 2 letters. F...u ... This usually throw them in a rage and they want to play every pot I'm in. Gives me the advantage . Other times I just leave the chat turned off. Lol

To me chatting is sometimes funny, or it can be a great tool when someone else is beginning to self implode and you can use it to help them along. I just hate it when someone starts cussing and calling people names because they don't like how you played YOUR hand.

it's a two-sided thing. Yes you can talk to some one and have fun but, like trolaAa said:"My opinion is that chat awlays help to understand the thinking of the online player there is no other way to recieve information for your opponent. At least for me it works" so you can give info two other players + you might put your self in tilt by almosy befriending the person and lose concntration... and go all-in with 72o =)
on the other hand it's not like a smile will steal you stack.
P.S. If you are easy tilted buy insults you really should turn it off 'cause you just might "find out" to much stuff about your family & your self =)

This is interesting, I can never find out information this way about my opponent . IMO they don't express themselves anyway that gives information that relates to the game in chat . I thought to find out information you have to watch your oponent play, not watch them chat. I will check this out next time.

I guess it's dependent on how good you are at it.
Insofar as do you give off tells of your hand strength and can you gain information about your opponents hands. My advice would be keep the chatter to a minimum if you don't feel comfortable or feel you might give something away.

chit chat

It depends, each table is different. I've heard some good jokes and I've been antagonized for lucky play, just calling the heckler to get them out of the tourney is playing their game, but I don't pass up an opportunity to cut the chit chat short and knock out a heckler or two. Though I think some people clam up when they have a hand.

This is the type of behavior I used to look for, my exp. tells me that most if not all that use this ploy are looking for particular results from this button pushing.

Doesn't often present itself, but if a premium hand is dealt to you soon after the 'rant', it can develop into a play to exploit the tiltee(?)
I don't see near as many people these days that take this tack.
Actually the volume of chat that I've seen lately as decreased a lot.

I chat at the poker table for entertainment and also for the part of the social scene that I miss at the live poker tables. Sometimes I will be chatting away like crazy, then at other times quiet as a mouse.

If that chat changes your play then it hinders you, try to keep the two separate. I chat but I try and keep emotion out of my playing. Sometimes the chat with evoke emotion so it can be tricky. Same goes for the people chatting with you tho so sometimes you can tell when someone is tilting and making bad calls. Hard to say tho, it goes both ways.

everything is good when it is controlled. You can do it to gather information but I got distracted in the last couple of weeks and decided to cut it down. It's necessary to do that if you feel like it's getting in the way of your poker skills.
