so there is concern in the media in the uk regarding gambling and it is a political issue. Generally the main media isn't focused on poker but fruit/slot machines in bookies, some media referring to them as crack cocaine of the gambling world where people can gamble literally hundreds of pounds a minute through there credit card etc on these machines in bookies.

the argument been that vulnerable people or gambling addicts get destroyed by these things and it has a damaging effect on society.

there has often been talk about outlawing these machines all together, well at first glance I couldn't care less I never go near them and I cant see any circumstances in which I would.

however this raised a concern for me if they ban these things could it spread to online poker?

they were talking about a betting cap limiting how much someone can bet in any given period this would destroy an income from online poker.

whilst not only capping how much success I could have eg stopping the higher stakes ever been available to me should I excel to that level it goes further. since 10% is an exceptional return if they limited the daily betting to £100 it would mean my daily income wouldn't grow beyond £10. currently in normal circumstances technically I stake several hundred $s every day, naturally as profitable sit and go player its the same money been repeatably staked. however technically its hundreds gambled daily.

so I don't just take this lightly I googled uk gambling laws and politics for a bit.

towards the end of this year the plan is to change legislation so that offshore companies will have to apply for licencing to operate in the uk and pay taxes to the uk to have the right to open up to uk customers.

fair enough
1. would this scare certain sites off? I doubt it would stop poker stars however things are done politically behind the scenes and the US is stubbon and has its grudge they could always talk the uk into refusing pokerstars licence.

2. would this affect me? is the rake the sites charge the standard everywhere or do they charge different amounts of rake to people in differing countries as tax laws are different and therefore the sites operating costs will be different for various countries.

3. I also don't know how the bookies are been taxed is it on my stake or on there profit? in which case basically the uk would just get a proportion of my rake etc.

but how would that work? I mean in theory if I achieved super nova elite with the stellar program and the vip program the rake back equivalent would literally be 68%+ and that's assuming I use the ffps for only instant cash and not other things such as the concierge service etc. so would the site be taxed on the full rake in this scenario or on the amount after I got the rakeback?

I mean currently we can only deal with the legislation as it is due to come in since the poker sites will face taxes they could have avoided before the fundamental question is will these additional costs be absorbed by the sites or will the sites pass it onto the players?

does every country get the same polayer reward program or is it different for certain countries?

does everyone pay the same registeration fee or does that vary? im pretty sure rake is same in for cash in every country not sure about sit and goes or tournaments.

It would seem the rake is the same for all countries, as a lot of different countries are represented at the table, ie. canadians, germans, russians, ect. all at the same table. Could be a slight difference if the currency exchange rate is implemented, but i doubt it makes a big difference, since just about every site out there uses U.S.D. as the currency of choice.

I don't think a government should tell you what to do with your money. You could dump just as much in currency exchange in a day as high stakes online poker. Only there is stigma related to poker because of the gambling aspect.

I feel the same about your consciousness. Why should someone else tell me how and what substances I can take to explore other realms of my mind(or the communal group mind). I would say more but Graham Han**** does a much better job. Look him up. It is a worthwhile listen.

well firstly i think weather government should or should not allow people to take any sort of drug is debatable but irrelevant to my concerns, all i will say on the issue is i have several times been in areas where people have been doing substances that are not legal, one thing i noticed is these people are not in full possession of there consciousness or fully in control of there behaviour often i felt threatened and in fear for my safety, and with good cause, i would not want to live in a society where by numerous people were in that state and the fact is people been in that state put a burden on the society through threatening others in that society requiring police intervention that ultimately costs the tax payer and also building a medical bill that society will have to take of whilst also immobilising these individuals from been useful for society.

of course this can be debated but I myself would rather have a society the limits people from taking substances that ultimately makes them have a negative effect on society.

i think thats entirely different from a society allowing people to gamble for obvious reasons. i wouldnt want to live in a society that is a nanny state and forbids people from spending there money how they wish for entertainment purposes. these are different issues.

however ultimately there are many controversial issues in the world and I am sure it would be hard to find anyone anywhere with whom there would not be some issue we passionately disagreed on this would apply to most people as well.

Ultimately though its irrelevant I am not currently in a position to make much difference to any policies in the world and i assume neither are you should we reach the point where either of us is in a position to make changes to anything then the conversation may have merit.

but for now my efforts are not to debate what should or shouldnt happen but more what is likely to happen and how it is likely to affect me.

I am concerned that England may change its position on gambling and I am curious as to what changes may or may not come into place and how it may affect me ultimately i created this thread so that people who informed in areas i may not be could offer there input on that issue.

There are plenty of laws to regulate someone's actions. If anyone breaks those laws they should face the consequences.

My mind is my most valuable asset. Much more so than my bank account. I want full dominion and control of what I experience as long as it does not infringe upon others.

I want to be free to spend my money as I wish but more importantly use my mind as I wish. You use the term nanny state when it pertains to your wallet and spending decisions. I believe the nanny state concept is much more intrusive when it forces adults to view the world from a preset notion of good and bad consciousness.

I totally disagree. I think that drugs should be legalized across the board. You are fighting a symptom of a problem with a "war on drugs." The amount of money spent to stop illegal drugs is astronomical! Think about all the coast guard, police, DEA, FBI, and other people that employed in the US alone to stop drugs. Then add on top of that the cost of the prison system to house all the offenders.

History has proven that there will always be 15 - 20% of any population that will abuse the drug of choice. Be it alcohol, heroin, cocaine, etc. It does not matter the drug, it will be abused weather it is legal or not.

So, say you stop fighting this war on drugs. You take all the money that was used for it and dump it into education, community centers, and rehabilitation. Cigarette smoking in the US shows the proof. When you educate people from a very young age about the harmful effects of smoking, most people made the right decision to never start. Then with education of the current smokers, over 50% of smokers have quit. The use of tobacco products has dropped by 62% since this education program was started.

Drugs are not the problem! Break down of family, single parent homes, unsupervised and under education of children, lack of funding for community outreach programs, and the lure of fame and money through TV is the problem.

You legalize the drugs, make tax money on them, put people to work making them, and educate people with all this money and the problem will subside. It will never go away but at least it is minimized the most efficient way possible. Lastly, the added benefit of violent crime dropping. After the prohibition of alcohol was lifted, violent crime in the US dropped 75% !

The solution is NOT a "war on drugs!"

I disagree.. I think pot should be legal as it is less harmful then cigs and alcohol (in fact it has benefits) I don't smoke it but I still believe it is one of those things that should be legal.. However pot is not an addictive, kill some one, perform sexual favors, steal form your family type of drug like crack or heroin is...

The way to stop these type of drugs isn't to make them legal it is to keep people from trying it for the first time as this is where people get addicted.. Crack and heroin have terrible side effects and are nearly impossible to get off of by your self..

If I can just go to a general store and by crack its 100,000 x more possible I'm going to become an addict.

Saying it cost to much to stop drugs is a horrible example of a why or why not to be illeagal, where do you stop? Hey rape, murder, are expensive lets make it legal and see if it stops just is not going to work just like drugs.

Maybe instead of making it a less of a penalty it should become more of a penalty? I guarantee drugs and crime rate will go down if the people dealing them get life in prison or worse..

I think its disgusting my honest oppinion their is a bookies on every street corner no gambling addict can escape the addiction. also the vulnerable and the desperate are inclined to spend money there.

I had a bad roulette problem real bad I lost jobs because of it it was so bad I would spend a months wage in 4 hours and not even leave myself petrol or food money for work.

Poker saved my life - and I honestly believe that on literal terms.
Im not a stupid person I understood what I was doing and the odds of wining but my head was in a real bad place.

the amount of times I had attempted to sort myself out only to walk past a bookies on my way to the shop having small change from a note and end up completely broke (there were big wins ofcourse) but adventually I lost everything including 5 or 6 jobs.

Im now strong enough to walk into a bookies without gambling on machines or play cards at the casino without losing my money on the roulette. and certain people and places I ended up completely transitioned my mind to a new place where roulette is no longer appealing.

luke, I dont believe this will effect online poker but I do think they will and should clamp down on the TV advertisement of online casino sites, its getting worse to the point where its advertised at night beetween every break.
people are getting drawn in by bonuses and offers.

If they managed to stop this I think it would be fantastic for poker. the one thing about 888 poker is you will always get fish as it diverts degenerate players from various sources continuously,
and since its not really a multi table poker site serious players in the low stakes are few and far beetween. Its the future of poker for guys like us looking for a big cash on the weekend against a very weak field (big gambling sites that run poker) are all fantastic for cash games and mtts

Poker is treated like a drug in some countries.
At all times of men history people used drugs. So it is culture in a way. But only nowadays it came to a point where drugs became commercial goods and some people make profit out odf it and some are chasing them.
I like to live in a world where u can buy all drugs everywhere above a certain age , with good knowledge about the risk of taking them .
If all is legal there will be no more drug crime, and the drug taker will not criminalized
