i believe that in 180BC the cavemen were playing with stone cards for very high stakes at the time,the buy in was 2 sheep. this was played everyday and a man called kakasa was the most winningest player at the time his net profit was 18 goat and 12 sheep which at that time is the equivilant of 20million dollars.SO anyway the game was running for about 4 to 5 hours} and he had lost his 2sheep then another 2sheep so he was starting to tilt.the he bought back into the game for 3sheep. he got ace king of hearts and pushed a leg into the pot then the person he was playing with pushed 4 sheep{whole}into the pot.he insta called and they flipped over their stones. his opponent was holding the 72o and won the pot with a pair of 2s which he caught on the river. kakasa got so angry he went into his cave and brought back a donkey and said that the donky played better than his opponent thus making the term "donkey" a term assocciated with bad play { so i believe}

Actually, it's derived from the latin- donkassmadramama, which was a bastardized Assyrian term attributed to Lot on the occasion of his last comment to his wife. Literal translation is somewhat murky, 'cause he was just Babelling at the time.

Real live donkey - you load them up to the max so they can carry all your goods up the mountain - when you reach the top of the mountain you unload them - and the donks job is done.

Real live poker donkey - they load themselves with chips and carry them almost all the way to the final table - they fall in love with a JT suited vs AA and get felted - they unload all the chips into your stack - and the donks job is done.

I would go with Emperor, except I would think it would be more along the lines of dumb-ass/dumb-donkey. I would imagine instead of calling a new player a DA, it's 'nicer' to call them a donk-ey.

I agree with everyone here. It's the short way of calling someone an @ss.

While I've been playing four years now, and I can honestly say that I have only recently started hearing the term "donk". Recently as in the last 6mo. or so.

I would like to add that my friends and I were calling each other and other people donkeys before I ever heard it uttered at a poker table or on a poker broadcast.

donkey

[dong-kee] noun

A scruffy, hairy creature of indo-european origin known for it's large hind quarters and stubborn nature. Also answers to the name of Mrs. Snowman.

Hope this helps.

I think donkey is just a general term for anyone who is crap at anything - it's not poker specific. I remember back in the 70's going to football games and the crowd would chant "eeeh aaw, eeeh aaw" (as in the sound that a donkey makes) to the oposition team whenever they made a particuarly bad mistake.

I still want to know why "ass" is censored in the chat window. It's not a bad word, I mean it's in both the dictionary and the bible.
