I was talking to my cousin the other day and he's a pretty solid reg on FT playing ring games at $25/50 and some 30/60 and he was telling me about how at anytime he only ever has around 15k in his FT cashier which suprised me as he is buying in for around 10k when I asked why he explained that he keeps his 'bankroll' in the bank to collect interest on and also says its a safer place to keep his money. This struck me as pretty simple but smart does anyone else do this and what are your thoughts?

your "bankroll" isn't necessarily whats in the cashier on a site, its what you have available on or off to play. Its smart to have it gaining interest certainly, however to have 1.5 bi in his account doesn't make sense either.

I would think a lot of regs would keep the majority of their roll in the bank as opposed to on the poker site they play, having said that 1.5 buy ins does seem too low, one would think you would at least be keeping 3 buyins and that's just if you single table higher stakes

Whats your cousins scree name? Just curious.

Also; I agree I think most high stake players will keep most of their bankroll in their bank - although one buy in does seem quite low. I'd of thought they kept maybe 10 buy-ins?

I alway have minimum BR on my acc. Its more than one buy in, cause I play micro stakes. But I take all money over 10 Buy in , off my acc. I remember Black Friday.

There are various ways to deposit money on to a poker site in a matter of seconds, so I doubt having little more than one buyin is actually a problem. It's easy enough to sit out a couple of hands.

I've reduced the total amount of money I have on poker sites by well over half since Black Friday.

The fact that your friend is smart and knows how to care for and grow your money, because if you leave it for 2 or 3 years, the money grows alone is a very wise decision.

If you're going to move your money off a site and then back on when you need it, you need to consider the transaction costs such as foreign exchange fees. It's quite possible that these costs will exceed the interest that you will earn by moving the money to your bank account.

Regardless of the costs associated with moving your money, however, the failure of companies such as Full Tilt, Ultimate Bet, and countless other smaller sites should teach us that it is never wise to leave too much money in one's poker account for too long.

Keeping the bulk of his roll in a safer place is smart, although the interest rates on savings and money market accounts are pitiful.

The majority of my bankroll is in my bank account because I like it there where I can access it immediately should I need to.

It also helps that my debit card doesn't have any deposit or withdrawal fees on it.
