I haven't been able to find any statistics on this, but I'm curious to know if anyone has or has an opinion on this..

Say they legalize poker online in the United States… Do you think it will help or hurt the live poker rooms? One theory is that it will get more people to play poker thus creating more players that will want to play in card rooms and casinos. The other theory is that it will take away from casinos and card rooms because people can more easily play from the convenience of their homes..

Thoughts???

I really don't think it will affect the live poker tournaments and games. I love playing online poker but live poker is a whole different environment and you will always have the players that will strictly play live because in live poker you are hiding behind a screen the only way you can read a person is by betting patterns but Live poker you can read players and habits that makes for a interesting and quite different ball game.

Hmmm... well, what happened to the card rooms when online poker got big in the U.S. 8-9 years back? The live card rooms exploded. Pretty much every casino had to expand it's poker room and add tables.

It has a whole different dynamic the live poker online , issue of stealing blinds at + generates a change in how you are seen in the table, or how you '' handle '' on fichas.Eu particularly think the online much more quiet , you can play trembling and still pass bluffs haha Now regarding the question , I believe that poker has tendency to grow with the popularity and recognition of the sport as the mind ... but face difficulties as in the US , I believe it is matter of time for this down swing go to the end!:p

Obviously there would be some an afffect to some degree but overall, people like live tournaments and cash games much more for several reasons. I myself like live because of the simple fact that you can read your oponent. You can only speculate online with timing and what not when he/she could just be texting on their phone or whatever. In live games you can see their charater in fine detail especially after hours of play.

Now online poker tournaments hold high volumes of players and you can play multiple tables at one time which is great. You certainly cannot do that live at a casino which gives the online industry an edge. In addition to haing many tables running at once, you also have the luxuary of simply playing where ever you want. And with the mobile Apps, thats certainly making it much easier.

I have heard that casinos want to join the online community as well. I know that Atlantic City Resorts is certainly looking into partnering with pokerstars and it's actually in the workings.

So if the casinos are able to get into the action then I don't see much of a change. There are still a lot of people who love the live action for the benefits of seeing their oponents and dealers. Time will tell though. I hope they leagalize it.

The more players you get involved with poker, the more players who will want to play poker, so it would have a trickle down effect on the live rooms.

I agree 100% with Tee on this.
The more new players that play online will also want to play live because that is where the glory is.
If and when online is legal in the States there will be a huge influx of new players.
It is hard to believe that the federal government is not actively pursuing this great tax revenue opportunity considering the current national debt situation.

Actually, as I mentioned in another thread, this is problematic. Assuming that 2007 was the crest of the poker boom, total online revenue was 3.2 billion U.S. dollars. Let's assume a high tax rate of 30%. That's 900 million dollars; nowhere near enough to get the attention of the Federal government. Estimated U.S. tax revenues for 2007 was 2.6 trillion dollars.

Cheers!

I do not think it takes people to online poker and other casino games live room. on the contrary it will increase the number of poker players in every way. It is my humble opinion. regards

If the casinos could offer online they could benefit from both live and online. I have to drive to another state to play live and wish they had an online poker room where maybe I could satellite into live tournaments at their land based site

Kind of funny to me. All I have to do is say how many people live in the states where poker is legal and how many play online poker. No a drop in a bucket. I wonder just how many people play poker in NV

Anything which drives up interest would help both. I never understood the casino position against online poker. People who like to play online will play in casinos.

Live play is a unique social experience for newcomers and seasoned pros. Some people simply prefer the live experience.

If I think it would increase the number of players online but would not affect the game live as it is a different style and we live close to the surface every sense of the game

You can read you opponent online it just takes practice. Things like bet amounts, bet speed, their stats ect. People always think that you cant read your opponent just because you cant see their face. Sometimes you can even get a read off them if they type. I personally like online poker because it just feels more relaxing and faster paced. Would i still play live if they legalized online poker? YES

I believe faithfully that would help , because poker is usually a very attractive game, and if you play online , you will want to have the experience of playing live , and if you play live , sooner or later , end up playing online then ... both to help , and it's great to be so !

I agree with those who say it does not affect . I think that is a variant of poker and is good for those who do not play live . It's a great manerda to play the online and can play several tournaments and tables at once and I feel very good

Do you think legalized online poker would help or hurt live poker rooms?

Personally I think Online card games with their "random" number generator is GARBAGE poker HAS hurt the poker industry more than it has helped it.

Go to to ANY SITE out there....and ask yourself...

How many times do you see idiots playing A 8 offsuit.... AND WINNING...

How many times do you see people playing JUNK hands (in or out of position) just to catch the river?

When you go into a live tourney, how many of these IDIOTS to you find on your table lasting until the first break and/or antes start hurting chip stacks?

Now ask yourself if you were to see some donk play a live hand like they "could/WOULD" play it online 90% of the time, how tempted are you to reach across the table and slap them for playing a cra[p hand like a little ######!!!

SO YES, Online card games has HURT the over all game of cards from a "(professional)" player's point of view!

DON'T look at ME like you KNOW me, cause you DON'T F$$$$ing KNOW ME!!!:D
