PLEASE!PLEASE!PLEASE!FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY!LOCK THIS THREAD DOWN!IT HAS NO FUNCTION WHATSOEVER, HAVING BEEN DETERMINED OVER AND OVER AGAIN THAT POKER ISN'T A SPORT!IF SOME CONSIDER IT AS SUCH ,GOOD FOR THEM!NOW LET THIS STUPID,IRRELEVANT,WASTE-OF-TIME THREAD DIE...PLEASE!

^^^^^ THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's ridiculous how people consider poker a sport just because it requires skills. I mean honestly, there are many other events and games that requires skills and should come first before Poker whether it should be considered a sport or not.

Games that requires skills that should be discussed first before poker: Tetris, Monopoly, Starcraft, Halo 2, YuGiOh and Pokemon trading card games, beer pong, bird hunting, and Dance Dance Revolution. These games' level of luck is very minimal compared to Poker and skills will prevail at all times, whether we play today, tomorrow, etc. In Poker, skill will only prevail over the long run of many hands and tournaments. In the games I've mentioned, better player will ALWAYS(or at least almost always) beat a worse player. In Poker, that cannot be said since skills are determined and revealed overtime.

Poker is an awesome card game that requires skills of knowing the odd of cards, reading your opponents, etc but to be considered a sport is a pathetic joke. It clearly shows me how inactive people are in their lives who have never played real physical sports in their lives.

Can we honestly say Jonathan Duhamel is the best player in the world since he has won wsop 2010 Main Event, the biggest and the most prestigious tournament in the world? I believe not.

Can we say that the winner of any of the games I've listed above in 2010 biggest event be the best player in the world? Yes.

I do consider poker a sport, because it shares a feature that most sports have: there is lots of thinking involved, as well as strategy and thing that we can detect in most sports.

Just because something requires skill, doesn't make it a sport. Cooking a meal without burning the whole house down requires skill. Taking a shower without slipping and breaking your neck requires skill. Don't remember the last time I saw the World Showering Championships on TV though (hmm, idea for a porn film). Poker takes skill, dedication, preparation and after long sessions I can feel mentally and physically knackered. I suppose I define a sport is something you wake up from the next morning with aching muscles, so poker doesn't qualify. But then again, I am kind of out of shape!

Definitely sport, but their are many similarities to it I think. Their is advantage to being in shape, because you are more likely to being able to play well longer (similar to when your in shape for sports). They are also both stressful

While poker does require skill, along with mental stamina, and exercise may improve mental acuity (you can technically train for it) there is nothing, even remotely, athletic about competing when playing poker in the slightest.

What about the cheer of victory :p
But seriously now, it's not called gambling for nothing.
It's not a sport but you can't compare it to chess or checkers either.

I feel the same way.

Besides, just wait another month and we can go through all this again in another thread just like this.

it is defentley a sport need mentaley strong players harder than chess as you need to be able to handle pressure and have a good read on the other players and i have to say this game is 70 % luck 30 % skill as you can have 95% luck but without skill you cant get paid

If Poker is a sport, then SEX is a sport too since it requires skills and it requires more physical activity than poker.

Any game where luck plays such a large part cannot be a sport. You could be the 'best' player in the world but lose to the worst. It's just a game.

Skill is required? I believe it is more true to say "Skill is desired".

And sex can not be a mental "sport" since it is a common belief that most men do not have adequate blood supplies to operate both a penis and a brain.
Or perhaps it IS a mental sport, as the fact is that many believe they posses skill, but this is in fact all in their mind..............................

poker requires skill and great practice just like any other sport. and is actually very competetive, now i think if there's e-sports, then poker should also be considered as a sport. also,it can actually be played in a professional level.

I see it as a sport
Anything that you spend time learning , practising more to tone your game especially in live tournaments where you have to be phsically and mentally ready for the battle ahead
playing 10 hours a day for 3 days in a live tournament require the same attributes of a sportsman imo anyway

Poker IS a sport.

The answer is Yes!
A sport is a physical endurance (ea swimming) or a physical game (ea soccer) or a mindgame (ea chess) which is practiced in competitions or for recreational use.
Also, The International Mind Sports Association has officialy recognized poker as a mind sport.
