Do I strive on or just quit?

Hey Guys. Im usually not a quitter but I've just been going through a consistent losing streak where I just cant seem to make any money at all in the micros. Even worse, Im now paying off fish who flop flushes with middle pair (WTF is wrong with me. Someone needs to shoot me in the head).

My beginning was a decent rise in 2nl where I made a profit of $84 and started to take shots at 4nl. However, it all seems to go down hill from my first couple of shots where now, my br is down to a sad $72 and my losses arnt even from 4nl anymore. After losing about $6, I decided to drop back to 2nl and grind to $90 or $100, renew my confidence in my game and take another shot at 4nl. I know that during my shots at 4nl, I had the better hand when the money went in but just didnt hold up or played standard and my opponents just got lucky, no biggie.

Back at 2nl now, my losses are worse than ever and I cant even beat the fish anymore. I've been starting to know when im beat and try to discipline myself, even learning to fold queens pre and post flop when there is something off about my opponents' actions (I folded QQ on a low card flop after 3betting and getting 2 villains after one villain 3bet first villain's min raise and to my glee, saw that I made the right decision and lost the minimum). I've opened up my range a little and have started to even win a little with middle pairs and use pot control to keep losses at a minimum. But somehow, despite following the same rules as before, money flows out instead of in.

I've tried taking a break to cool down and control my tilt and play multiple tables to keep my emotions in check. I try to play disciplined poker but rarely ever win a big pot anymore. My micro money makers are folded to or cracked by sets. It almost makes me think somehow my cards are on display to the table.

I dont have rakeback (Party has no rake back which sucks big time) so there is no real loss there. I could move to pokerstars and play zoom or SnGs where the rake is a little more beatable but villains are tougher so I'll probably just run into the same situation. And by withdrawing now, I still made a tiny profit from my short poker venture and learned about the game and myself which in itself has been quite rewarding.

I doubt another break will help any and Im not sure what else I can study to beat the micros since more advanced strategies will probably not work against the calling stations and fish who call with any two suited cards and ABC poker should be enough to crush the micros according to everyone here and on 2+2. I think the worst thing however is my complete loss in confidence in myself. I know I was on a hot streak in the beginning of my career but it might just have been that hot streak that made me money and not my skill at all.

How does a poker player rebuild himself? Im no pro and was starting poker so I could have something fun to do and make some pocket money on the side but it seems thats out the window now that I cant even beat the worst players at the game.

What kinda tilts me though is that my graph shows that my earnings are still above my all-in EV line which is crazy although I understand that all-in EV is a terrible measure of luck. What is worse is PTK's assessment of me which says that Im running hot (49) even though I definitely am not.

OK, A LOT of players may disagree with me here, but poker stars or party, a bad player is a bad player. It dont matter what site they play on.

As far as the rest goes, I feel ya man. I cant say anything except I feel the same way ATM- cept its 10nl to 25 nl - and I am still going for it.

GL. I say keep plugging.

Sorry to hear you're going through a tough time with poker. Without a little more info (# of hands this downswing is over, for one thing) it is hard to give useful feedback. I will say this though: taking a short break from poker (a few days, a week maybe) is almost never a bad thing, particularly if you are running bad. It lets your mind take a break from the stresses that poker can induce, and at least for me, tends to put my losses more into perspective --> "That was in the past, this is now." It becomes a fresh start.

On the other hand, if it's more just that your confidence is shaken, you could in fact be getting your money in a bit worse than you realize. It's easy to get into the habit of ignoring those little moments that could be actually adding to your losses. So maybe if you do take a break, take a little time to study the game more. It doesn't have to be complicated things - it could even be reading material focused specifically on micros.

Last thing (I promise!) - if poker is just no longer fun for you, then it could be time to call it quits. It sounds like, at the moment, it's not fun for you. But again, this will probably get fixed with a break. I know that for me, poker can turn into a real grind sometimes, and I'm just a recreational player! Taking a short break (with a bit of studying in there) reminds me that losses will happen, but that I really do love the game. (The studying also usually gets me anxious to get back in the game, rather than just the theory!)

Best of luck to you in your decision, and hopefully we'll see you out at the tables again at some point! :)

Agree. Loads of massive fish at 2nl on Stars, plenty at 10nl too...just need to table select more.

Sounds like you need to work out your tilt issues ClubArrow because it's holding you back. Changing sites may help, new start and all that.

Yeah, I think I might move to PokerStars. I dont like Party's software, lack of rakeback, and the rake sucks. SnGs less than $10 are not worth it at all. I guess zoom is fun too since I liked rush poker at FT (god I miss that site. I was actually recovering my br there too before BF).

Zoom is fun but regular games are better if you want to improve imo.

Maybe I'm reading the OP wrong, but it seems like you've made some changes to your game compared to how it was when you were beating 2nl. As we study and learn, it's usually if not always tempting to try to integrate newer and/or more advanced ideas into our play. However, they're not always completely appropriate vs the level of opponents we're facing, and we don't always employ them as well as we could because it can take a while to learn to use sound concepts properly in actual practice.

And given you're not enjoying yourself, quitting isn't the only option. It's harder, but if you can reach an understanding of why you're so put off by the loss of what is after all not a lot of money, that might be the first step to rebuilding your enjoyment.

I feel for you, all poker players go through what you are and it is horrible, but it does change in the end even though it seems like your bad run will last forever, it wont.
You talk about moving from Party to Poker Stars cos you dont get Rakeback on Party, Poker Stars dont have rakeback, only a VIP scheme which is virtually worthless at micro stakes, I suggest you find a site with decent rakeback which can make a hell of a difference, rakeback keeps me as a winning player cos i play a lot of volume at micro stakes.
