I don't limit my play to just huge sites like UB and stars, though. I do play some of the smaller sites. Usually, if I am brand new to a smaller site, I won't make a deposit immediately. I like to feel the place out some, play in some freerolls
, you know, really get lay of the land and feel for the interface. If everything jives and I read some reviews on it, then cool, I'll hang around.
Plus, a lot of smaller sites, while not having a lot of traffic, will have sufficient traffic to keep interest and often times most of that traffic is inexperience. So I think that there are benefits to both large and small sites.
My preference will usually depend on the particular day. Oh, one other thing I find to be fairly true...the newer, smaller sites won't usually have insane rules for points and raked hands played before you can withdraw freeroll winnings. In fact, I've found sites with no restrictions on freeroll winnings at all (or some let you use the freeroll winnings to play the raked hands and will give you the net profit as non-restricted cash plus the points/hands needed to start converting).
