I finally GIVE UP. There is no way to win. I`ve been playing for two years, and thousands of dollars. I admit, I`m not aggressive enough. But that isn't what poker is all about, is it? I`m just trying to be a realist here. If you just dont have it, you just dont have IT.

Agression is very important but you need to apply it correctly.

hi there,

i felt the same way last winter. then took a step back and found a way to play profitably. or at least without scared money. scared money makes you play less agg. you have to be agg at any table. if you would like a chat until you feel you would want to play again send us a private chat.

good luck

I love to play. I do it for entertainment. I`ve learned alot.
No, I dont play with scared money.
People playing with play money don`t play poker like with real money, so , no fun there.
I live far from town , so no games close.
So, tell me boys, is aggressive the name of the game?

So, OOOO, how, when do I apply it correctly?

Yes it's incredibly important.

The when is a lot trickier, but "most of the time" is a close answer.

Just raising when you would call or check a fair chunk of the time and see what happens for starters.

I`ve been playing for two years, and thousands of dollars.

... and you are only now asking these basic questions ?

Get a couple of good books and study, I would suggest. Then try again when you are better prepared.

Yea, I'd definately take some time off and think about reading some books, posting lots on the forum and learning more about the game without actually playing.

Good Advice.

Same thing happened to me, although I did not lose thousands, more like a few hundred.

I went to the local library and got some books, read as much as I could on the web and decided to play only free rolls until the end of the year.

Over the last seven weeks things have just started to click. I have managed to cash in twelve times at full tilt and a few times at poker stars. The object for me is not to make money at free rolls, but to gain experience.

So maybe you could do something similar. Try not to make millions in your first year but slowly build up to it. You could also play the other poker games. You may find they are better siuted to your style of play. Don't forget to study the strategy first.

Anyway, whatever you decide, best of luck and I hope the new year is more profitable.

Seriously... if you are fond of the game, pick up some books. If tourney play is your thing.. grab the Harringtons On Holdem Series. It is well worth the read.

When I first deposited I also became frustrated when I wasn't winning. I withdrew what I had left and eventually started playing freerolls. I've enjoyed playing about and have enjoyed playing almost as much. I have found several poker forums where I have learned a lot

i just got HOH for christmas read up to reading table chapter, only got one sample question wrong so far, i am sure they are alot more invovled as the book goes on. i would go down in limits first, not just give up, start low and build up your confidence again, start tearing up those low buyin sng's. not too sure about low ring tables alot of lottery players who seem to hit more often then not.
vary your play would be one thing if you are easy to read, good players will see it right away. if you don't like the style of play on one table move and find another one that you do enjoy.
play for fun and hopefully the money will come, if not chose to use it as entertainment, set aside an amout you can live without, and if it's gone o well. i will never get back all my green fees for golf, arena fees for hockey (yeah canadian boy). find what you are willing to pay to play even if you lose it, and play on man play on

Poker without aggression is like a football player being afraid to tackle someone. Now its not just about aggression, but just like in grade school you have to stand up for yourself and not let other players bully you around. If you play smart then the aggression will come naturally. Knowing when to push, rereaise, steal, are all apart of the game but more importantly is being able to outwit/outhink your opponent. going to a table and just being aggressive will only work short term cause people will figure you out, so, change it up, play smart and the winnings will follow. like others said pick up some books, and look online for some poker videos as well. Also look up small ball strategy, this may help you as it initially looks somewhat aggressive but its easy to apply.

Why would you give up?
All that is needed to succeed in any venture you set out to do is a little education.
Read some books, watch some videos and ask alot of questions here:)

Try watching some poker on T.V. or watch some of the high stakes games on line. Watch how the winners are playing certain hands they show down and then try to emulate that. A little observation can go a long way. Other than that read,read,read... take a break for a while but don't quit

I would suggest Lou Krieger's book Poker for Dummies. He talks alot about Selective Aggression.:):)

depends what kind of tables you are playing at bro. if you are playing at the 10/25 cent blinds or higher than have you ever considered trying the 5/10 cent blinds. also bring less money to the table. i started on full tiltwith 150 dollars. lost it all in 4 days. than i put 25 on pokerstars and i played the 5/10 cent blinds. got all the way up to 80 dollars!!! my secret is i only bring 6 bucks to a table. thats my limit. try reading some books too man they help tons. and YOU MUST BE AGGRESSIVE

um .... kingIv ...

You should not enter a ring game with less than at least 100 big blinds imho. thats the general rule thereabouts.

so in a 5/10c game you need at least $10

but anyway, to the OP

Agression is very important in poker, because people will just steal steal and steal from you.

The only time non agression will work in your favour is if you are dealt a monster and slow play or you flop a monster and slow play it. Which you will probably only get maybe once every 25 hands in a tournament.

otherwise you get AK raise, get a caller, miss the flop, check and the caller throws in a single bet and you fold.

Agression is NOT only used to steal with.

You need to use your agression to determine how strong your hand is in comparison to your opponents hand.

for instance you flop middle pair, your opponent bets out.

Only way to determine how strong your hand is is not to call but to raise, if you get popped you can toss the hand away.

and so on.

Remember that bettors and Raisers win at poker, callers and checkers don't.

To answer your question - perhaps poker is NOT about agression then what is? playing your hands ? do you suppose that poker should be get your 2 cards everyone calls, everyone checks each street and the best hand wins the pot ?

if thats your idea of poker perhaps you should rather play slots and leave it up to chance.

Poker is a game of skill and part of that skill is known when and how to use agression to your advantage.

I say give it another shot - and be the hammer, not the anvil.

oh by the way kingIv - I suspect that you enter a game with $6 , wait for some good cards to come along, pop your starting stack to a few dollars more, then leave the game?

Thats ratholing and very frowned apon.

Don't give up!! At certain times in poker you have to be aggressive. Play the freerolls where there is only 200 to 400 people in them. So what if you lose? There is always another poker game to play and get better at.

Self confidence is how you measure your success in poker. Without risk there is no reward!! Giving up = zero confidence:trytofly:
