Crushing $10nl but not $4nl

I think I have worked out why. Finally.

At $10 nl I can usually tell when I have the best hand / opp is drawing / opp is ahead.

But at $4nl most players only have two plays.

1. Slowplaying
2. Chasing flushes.

So I am constantly pushing at the wrong times and being too conservative at other times.

Moral of the story. $4nl players are better than me. But I am better than $10nl players.


Man this is a funny old world.

One of two things:

They actually are better because they care more about their money, thus leading them to practice good BRM and keeping them in $4 games. So they could just be better players in those lower stakes.

Or it's merely that your style works well up against the typical style of a $10 player, whose tendencies are contrary to those of a $4 player. It's not that uncommon. I've heard of people having to skip a step in stakes in order to remain successful. For example, going from $3 tournaments to $13 tournaments, skipping $6 ones because they just can't seem to beat them.

In particular if they are buying in for the min amount they are just trying to hit and run and will call to catch the shove???

It is kind of weird, but I also find that I have an easier time beating higher stakes games than the low ones.

I think part of it is because at the higher stakes the play is more predictable in a lot of cases, and I have an easier time putting opponents on hands.

Also, the higher stakes makes me focus and concentrate better.

i like this idea of skipping a step in stakes, im going through something similar myself, but my sample size has a long way to go before i make judgments..

as far as being better in $10 than $4, i presume you have played more hands in $10, because of your winrate, ie because you have been able to consistantly stay there due to a quick buck here and there thus increasing your bankroll exponetially. this also sounds like you are unable to change. ie you have a pattern per hand, per bet, per re raise, and sounds like your either not applying your usual pattern to different games, or you simply need to change your pattern.

I tried 10nl today and I must You are definitely right about the game being softer.I think its full of degenerate gamblers and 4 nl isn't anuff for them to get off.I'm going to skip 5NL and buy-in half stacked at 10 and I'll have 16 buyins.I just saw a bunch of people betting with nothing every time.Not that they don't do that at 2 and 5 NL but it just seemed like there was more at 10NL.At least today there was.I'll give it a shot and see.Thanks O.P for the thought.

Could be that people playing at 10nl are just alot more rich than people playing 4nl so more chasing and gambling.

Where can you play 4nl? Is that 4 cents or 4 dollars?

hate to say it but those of you who think 10nl is easier obv dont have a big enough sample size nor are you very good at poker.

players are worse at lower stakes so that simply means its easier, you must have just been running better at 10nl than 4nl

Carbon has 4nl instead of 2c and 5c, think I've seen 4nl party poker HH too...and from 2nl > 25nl my winrate has almost been cut in half at each stop, lower definitely means easier, but you may have to make some adjustments [or its sample size as said above]

I think carbon and doyles room have 2/4 cent.Jewboy07,I've seen a lot more donk moves at the 10 nl then I see on the 1/2cent on stars.My sample is small on 5/10 there because I just started my B.R there.I move there so I could use HEM to track my play so I'll know more about the actual stats when I get a few more hands in at 5/10.I was a winning player at 50nl on bodog before I moved to stars.So I do have some experience on the way people play at the micro level.I never played 1/2 cent on stars and just thought stars had a harder field of players.I guess I should have checked it out more but I was try to follow good bank roll management.
