If Poker is profitable, why are there so many coaches? If they were actually good enough at Poker to teach it, wouldn't they just spend that time playing poker and making money instead?

Coaching is guaranteed money whereas something like tournament poker is super high variance, so really strong players coach to balance essentially

:listen:It's a good question, but life is about sharing your knowledge. Imagine if the world if nobody shared their ideas or solutions. In poker it is the same, the best share their knowledge so that you additionally investigate and use your talent to improve day by day. That way we will have more colorful and competitive tournaments.

that has been the age old question. but some players get tired of the grind, and enjoy teaching and seeing players become better more profitable. BUT, many of the "coaches" you see no longer beat the game and that is why they coach now.

It lowers the overall variance of your income. It's like balancing your stock investments with bonds or buying insurance, you're giving up EV for security.

It's something like cutting your own hair. You may have the skill to do the job in other people, not with yourself.

Same with coaches, with poker or sports. Sometimes you don't have the body or mind for the sport, or can't see your own flaws or what to improve, but still can see flaw in others. Still can help others correct flaws, improve their game.

Lot's of good answers in this thread.

Even though I personally decided to stop coaching, I did it in the past as a way to get away from the game for a bit but still make an income at the same time. I also feel like my time spent coaching helped me improve because it forced me to explain to somebody else exactly why I make the decisions that I do at the poker tables.

I don't believe in coaching. The best way is to watch twitch and learn from people during hands that you play in.

Because to coach is the easiest way to make money on poker. :)

I think this is a bit shortsighted.
Everyone has some hidden leaks in their game which a good coach could easily find while you yourself cannot.
I can easily point some weakness in my game, but I'm sure there's a lot more leaks I'm not even aware of.
I do believe though, for someone who does not believe a coach would be helpful it's a self-fullfilling prophecy as indeed, the coaching would most likely have about zero effect.

Otoh, for someone open minded and ready to accept criticism and good advise it will be very helpful.
For me I think I would be embarrased about my play after a coach analysed my game :(

There's an old saying, you can't see the wood for the trees. A coach would pick up on leaks that we may not see even though they are glaringly obvious

I agree coaching is a good thing. I’m glad there are professionals who do this. Maybe some coaches are good at coaching and bad at following their own advice and that’s the reason they stick to coaching? Maybe they do it because they just love to do it. Either way I think it helps people who want to learn.

when you are sure about your ideas in poker and you will want to spend a lot of time playing the game and that means you will want to become a professional player then you will need for sure a couch you need to discuss hands, stakes when to play what to play... he could keep you hungry.

But why . Most of them play. Some know the theory but can not apply correctly.

I think provides stable income where poker has volatility to it. Also it lets them maximize their daily wage by coaching in low volume poker hrs.

after years of studying by myself and absorbing all the free content I could and becoming a winning player, I had a feeling I could do more and be better. I took some of my winnings and hired a real coach. My MTT ROI went from about 20% to about 100% in a few months....I'll admit I had some rungood mixed in there.

In short...the lessons paid for themselves in about 6 months. but I don't want to stop there, so I'm planing to continue and see where it takes me. As long as it keeps paying for itself I'll keep paying for coaching.
