Hey all,
I'm totally new to the internet poker thing. I've played a few of the freerolls at Ultimate bet and AbsolutePoker.

My resulsts have been decent but I can't seem to crack into the money/qualifying: in the Aruba qualifier last night I placed 87 out of 2691 (after I got my 20,000 chips in with AKsuited and lost to an ATsuited on a preflop all in- they flushed hearts- uggh). I also placed 40th out of 1355 entered into a freeroll on Absolutepoker.

My question is this. As a total rookie (I've only played 4 online freerolls ever) how good are these results? And what does it take (late in these tourneys) to have enough chips that your not running from the advancing blinds?

Thanks for any replies.

Pretty good results for your first few MTT's. However, I think you'll need quite a few more results to really know if you are that good or just lucky. I'd say 80-100 results would be a decent indicator.

Keep up the good work.

It takes a bunch of results before you start to analyze how good your play is, improvement, trends, and so forth, but it's a promising start.

well

If you are talking tournaments you need ALOT more to get a basic Idea of how you are doing. Some pro's go months and months without cashing in tournaments but that dosent mean they are doing anything wrong. Then there are the guys that enter their 1st tournament and win it and don't do anything after that. After you play make 150 or so tournaments then go over your notes and see how you are doing.

Those Freerolls are kind of gambling - as the low-buyin`s are .... you did well but as posted before you need more results. As you did write you`re totally new to the internet poker kind of luck ( I did finish 2nd playing my first real-money tournament which as a 3000$ guart - no idea how I manage this thing - lol )

Thanks for all the replies. That's some good info and they make sense. At least I have a better perspective through which to begin to view my results on a longer term scale. And that's what I was hoping to learn from you guys.

Anyway, I will read that article on freeroll stategy, I just can't at the moment. Thanks for the replies,
Peter

I tend to try to stay away from an all in bet preflop thats more than my stack when approaching the final table unless I have AA. If I lose with AA then it wasnt meant to be. Patience becomes a key factor in survival.

Can you say Chris Moneymaker?

Logo, finishing in the top 5% is great in both of your 1st 2 tourneys. You'll find that playing tight in those type of freerolls will consistently put you in the top 10-15%. Which is great for your average on the back of your WPT collectors card. But you'll find that in those tourneys there are so many guys taking chances to build up there stacks. Granted, many of them donk out early but there are a bunch that don't and eventually you'll be sitting next to a few later in the tourney and find yourself at a disadvantage. So you've got to go in with an adjusted attitude in those freerolls.
Seeing your just starting out and want to gauge your play, try some low end sng's with like 20 or less players. still be tight at the start because there's always a donk or 2 at each table but at least when the game gets rael there is time to play real poker.

My advice and I know some will disagree with me on this is just don't play freerolls. Ya you get tempted because of some cash prize or a free seat at the WSOP. But don't waste your time first it is not a true indicator you can see some tourneys where 10,000 people sign up 10 minutes later 5000 are left. My suggestion is don't play games that alter your game in any negative aspect. If it won't help you in Vegas don't do it. It only lowers your level of play.

If you do decide to play use it to learn to take a bad beat and to learn to be patient with donks at the table. Don't judge yourself by them you may play really well and do really bad in them or play really bad and do really well. Skill can help you get deep in the field but its pretty much a lotto. This is from someone who got a 2nd 4th and 8th in 3 days playing 5 freerolls. Then again those were HORSE.

Hope I am not discouraging you.

JUST A ROOKIE TOO

they sound promising
sometimes you have to fold a good hand like a k suited or pocket aces if you are not willing to live with the out come ( i have many times)
try not to get all in pre fjop with anything it is probably better to limp in with
great hands like these ( might be a smaller pot but it is better to be safe than sorry) and see the flop before you get ALL IN. you will be able to estimate your chances better. remember thats it is better to win a small pot then lose a big one. this is just my opinion hope this helps keep up the good play
hope to see you at the tables and good luck in the future( i hate that there is no spell check)

It looks like you're doing good but these are short term results and don't mean to much. It's possible that the cards were running for you and nothing more. If you can maintain these result over a long period, when you are doing good. Good luck!

Gah, what a long haul.

I'm trying the UB TEC freeroll to try out the software, and it's gone from 2,500 down to 123, but it's taken 2 hours and 22 minutes.

And there isn't even cash at the end of it. It's just a qualifier for a Sunday tourney that I don't know that I'm gonna play. Maybe if I multi table it with the Costa freeroll. That's if I can stay awake another hour to qualify.

Anytime you get past 2500 opponents, its a good day. Freerolls are freerolls.. Players will mass over 30k chips in less then a half hour going allin early with 44 etc. You must win satellites like sng's, or mt tourneys, to large cash tourneys, or just buy in. Then hope you hit a pay seat. And if that day happens to be your day and you strike gold, you'll have plenty money to stay at it and hope you strike again. You'll need enough of a losable bankroll to keep you going for a good year, then make a smart evaluation. If you don't have the bankroll to carry ya, then stick with freerolls. But before you get anything of value playing freerolls, you'll usually need your lucky day to strike back to back and sometimes three times, which is hard to do. Usually only one person out of all those players and tourneys is going to get paid. If your looking for practice or to have some fun, freerolls may be the way to go. But if you're looking to make money playing online poker, you need a good game, you need to know the online environment, you'll need money and you'll need luck. The value you place on hands while playing live should be less when playing online for the most part. Plenty days while playing poker its just gonna be your day. When those days come my way I want to be sure I'm playing a big cash tourney. Cash ring tables just not the right place to be playing poker online. Just a place to crunch numbers and for most people 90% or more losing money in the long run. Up today down tomorrow. If after a year of no good results trying tournaments online, stick to live play, or just have fun. Online poker a tough place to make money. Regardless you're off to a good start. Let us know how you're doing a year from now.
