Hi guys. Just wanna know what the ruling will be in a scenario like this.

During a tournament or even a cash game, when Player A has a mountain of chips in front of him, and Player B in the hand with him asks 'how much u got there?', A answers 'around $2000'. B then responds with 'alright then i'm all-in', as he covers A by far. A calls and wins at showdown.

However, when the dealer counts down A's stack, A has close to 3500. In this case, will B have to pay the full 3500 or just 2000?

I believe the logical answer will be that B has to pay the full amount as it is his own fault for not asking the dealer to count down A's stack, however I notice that most times especially in cash games at the casinos, players dont want to slow the game down by asking the dealer to count down every stack. So in essence, is this more of an etiquette issue? Cos if the ruling is that the fault lies with B and none of it lies with A, if I really wanted a shove/call and faced the same situation, I could easily just answer with a falsely low figure and force my opponent to pay me the real amount after he had shoved/called my shove.

Opinions?

I'm 99.9% sure that Player B is required to pay off the full amount because at the end of the day it's their responsibility to ensure they're happy with the information they've received. "About $2000" is a pretty vague answer that could have a lot of leeway in either direction. The only time I think they'd have any recourse is if Player A was deliberately hiding their big denomination chips behind their small change or something.

That said, there's definitely an etiquette issue at hand here too. If somebody asks you how much you're playing and you choose to answer then etiquette dictates you answer accurately. Remember if you don't want to answer you can always just let the dealer count your stack down instead. But deliberately giving false information is a pretty big no-no.

Idk how the ruling goes as far as giving a wrong number but i know at least at the casinos i play at if someone is hiding a high value chip and an all-in bet is made without the bettor seeing the high value chip they arent required to pay for that chip... now this may be different if there is a count asked for..

Always have the dealer count it. If you are planning to go all in you need to be sure how much you have at risk.

Yup definitely ask the dealer fir chip count and dont trust the other player. It would be your fault if you dont ask the dealer and trust the other players count. Its common sense though to ask the dealer for a chip count even after you asked the other player for their chip count.
