I have a question about the one chip rule that maybe someone here can answer. Playing in a tournament and I'm in the small blind. The blinds are 200/400 and a player raises to 1200. The action is on me and announce I re-raise, take back my small blind and throw in one single 5,000 chip without announcing a value. Is this considered a min raise or just making it 5,000 total? I assume it would just be the value of the chip since I did not state it otherwise.

Since you announced re-raise, I would say you raise to 5000, but I think its different from casino to casino.

Save yourself the trouble and always announce an amount. Do it loudly and clearly. If you don't, not only can you get accused of angle shooting, but you open yourself up for it as well.

Since u take back your SB, and toss in 5k, you are making a 3600 re-raise, making it 5K.
Once that chip crosses the betting line, it is the bet unless verbally state otherwise (like you are expecting it to be changed to smaller chips and will then take some back). You made no such statement.
Not a min-raise. The dealer should handle the math, and announce the action as a raise of 3600 and perhaps following each player still in the action and helping them figure out how much they would need to add to see the flop.

Most places a single over sized chip is a call unless the tourney director says otherwise during the rules/announcements at the start of the tourney. I have found out the hard way to just be very clear about what you are raising it to.

True... except he announced raise. So, it has to be at least a min-raise.

yeah b ut he said "reraise" before crossing the line with it so it would have to be at least a single raise......I don't play alot live but I do know the definition of reraise.....no casino can argue with the dictionary...could they? I agree with dont ever take a chance announce it first......to Vormech...I bet you like to pick fights with wife for the make up stuff ..don't you.

I was told when I three in $200 chip that it was only the minimum bet since I did not announce what I was raising.

If you say raise and put in a big chip that's the size of your raise. If you say call or don't say anything then it's a call and you get change. It's not difficult.

If you're putting in a single chip.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Yeah, I announced that I was re-raising before I took back my SB and put out a 5,000 chip yet the club I was playing at said it was only a min-raise. I just think it was crazy to announce a raise as well as the amount of the raise. Nothing like that was even stated before the tournament started.

I wasn't too upset since I ended up taking down the pot after the flop but it could have gone the opposite way too. From now on I'm just going to either announce the amount or always make raises with two chips or more.

In the Tournament Directors Association rules, announcing raise and then putting in an over-sized chip means you are raising to the full value of the chip. However, individual clubs and tournaments can have their own rules.

Yeah, this is one of those things that's going to change from place to place so it's just a matter of knowing the local rules.

You're obviously obliged to make at least a minimum raise but after that opinions will vary as to whether the default should be the full chip value or that minraise in the absence of a verbal statement.

Clearly not a call since it was announced raise. I'd be surprised that some casino/card rooms actually had a rule in the books that when you announce raise and toss out 1 large chip its only a min-raise, that makes no sense, should clearly be the total amount of the bet unless otherwise stated, but there is really no excuse for leaving that kind of decision in the hands of an idiot tournament director. As has been stated, announce the size and you have no problem.

You can always avoid many problems by simply announcing what you are going to do including amounts of your actions. It's amazing how so many people can't understand that.

In any casino I've played in that would be a raise to 5000. But if you're ina casino or place with house rules then you can always throw in an extra 100 chip (or whatever the lowest denomination is) and then there's no doubt.
