It is a soft play rule violation. You can check the nuts, you just can not check the nuts when you are the last player to act because you are not making your opponent pay anything when there is no risk at all to you this is soft play. You also can not just call a bet with the nuts when you are the last player to act in the hand if your opponents still in the hand have chips not in the pot , if you just call with the nuts and you are the last to act it is a soft play violation. If you are not the last to act in the hand then you may check the nuts in anticipation of making a check raise.

^ this.

It's a penalty because there's no reason NOT to bet in that spot, unless you're soft playing your opponent. And soft playing is against the rules.

.... checking the nuts on the river last to act is classified as "soft play" , players are expected to play the strength of their hand , it's basically to guard against collusion between players ... really no reason to ever check the nuts last to act , at least try and get paid lol

yes to all above answers, but I will add that the reason it is a 'soft play' is that the person with the nuts may not want to take chips from opponent because maybe they are friends

in darvins defense I do like his reasoning to see his opponents cards for information, but rules are rules
also this rule usually does not apply to cash games

I heard the rule was to keep players from letting friends at the same table not lose pots, doesn't sound true to me but that's what I heard. I don't like the rule It should be the players choice of action

it is true, its unfair to soft play your friends in a tournament situation and believe me it happens a lot, unfortunately this is the only rule we have to combat it if you cant hear players talk about it
