I am playing in a live tournament. I am in the small blind there are 7 players left out of 30 and the top five get paid. Blinds are 1500-3000 I have about 20,000 in chips. Chip leader is in the big blind with about 35,000 chips.

Im dealt J-10 os. UTG calls the 3000 and next guy folds. Position 3 goes all-in for his 3,400, I call and BB calls, UTG also calls. 4 player pot. Before the flop hits the table UTG checks, as do I. BB also checks. Flop is 6-J-4 rainbow.

Now, a 3 turns. UTG checks, I check and BB bets out 6,000. I, ticked off ask him "wtf are you doing". He says "The 3 helped me". UTG folds . I said Do you even know what a checkdown is? His reply is "but I hit the 3". I call the 6,000. Then the 10 comes. I have top two and still pissed I push. He call and has pocket threes. Three of a kind and I'm out. I Bubbled.

He goes on to tell everyone at the table he did the right thing because he was trying to take two people out. My mistake was not pushing after the flop. He wouldve never saw the turn if I had. I thought it was a classic checkdown, but I guess the checkdown is dead. I'm still pissed, and it's been about 24 hours. LOL.

Any thoughts to help me ease the pain??

Now why on earth would he not want to get value out of a set of 3's??

The best part of this is him basically telling you his hand and you lose.

1. Nice turn call/river shove......
2. You obviously have no poker etiquette and sound like a dick at the table
3. You announced verbally to the table that you were cheating
4. You deservedly got owned for it

Yeah sure...whatever you say..You obvioulsy dont know what a checkdown is either. I basically played maybe 15 hands all night. If I push at the flop, he doesn't see the turn. Nice talk , by the way. Theres one in every bunch.

I can't believe you didn't bet the flop. Yes I would want to knock the player that pushed allin out but I would also want to take down the pot. I guess I am not a firm believer collaboration between poker players at the table. Tough loss

I thought it was standard to check until your hand improved? He improved on turn, so bet.... You improved on flop and should have bet

OK I get what you are saying....the checkdown is basically dead. Many a time Ive seen someone bet into the pot with mid / bottom pair, just to loose to the person all in with a Q on the river....and they still think they played well?????

However looking at your post, its clear that you let emotion cloud your judgement. Take out of the equation for a second that someone was all in; would you still have played the same way? Doubtful...its your pot and we dont give free cards.

Real poker doesn't have checkdowns.

Poker at little old lady sewing clubs does.

Checkdown seems to be alive and well in this hand to me.

He checked until he had a hand strong enough to bet for value(which is exactly what he should do). Luckily for him you donked away your stack. What did you think he had when he TOLD YOU the 3 helped him? Let me tell you: It's 25, 57, or 33, your TP then top-2 is ALWAYS crushed here.

gg you.

The unspoken checkdown is still alive, but one can't expect it anymore.

The spoken checkdown was, is, and always has been cheating.

1. J10o SB competes to a raised 4 way pot - why ?
2. Checking down is used to make sure someone can beat the all-in by shortstack.
3. If someone is sure he can beat everyone it's quite normal to raise.
4. You should have raised the flop (if you are in - see #1)
5. You went on tilt as someone didn't behave the way you thought he should have.
6. Clearly not BBs problem, but yours.

I had 56s one time and wanted to see a flop so I limped and then button raised to 6x and I got pissed and punched him in the face and asked "don't you know what it means to let me see a flop?"

Come on Zach, you know better than to limp/punch.

^^^^^^ sorta reminds me of the old beastie boys tune, 'Paul Revere'

I love how so many Joes think everyone should play exactly the way joe wants them to. Pretty cocky

ok, look at what u said about the hand . you answered your own ? if i would have bet the flop.
Usually if u hit top pair with an all-in u still bet your top for value.
know if u would have hit bottom or middle yes i still check it down.
even pros tell (u still want to know were u stand)
Table talk the way u did was poor also most casinos will yell at u for that

Soooo, Judging by all the responses, the checkdown is dead. It won't happen again...believe me.

As for talking about a checkdown AFTER he bet, I don't think it's cheating. There can't be a checkdown after someone bets. If I would've said before the flop "lets check it down" then there would've been a problem.
