Interesting first post! and I probably can speak for most of the old timers here and NO we don't cheat and wouldn't encourage anyone to either. My question to you is would you cheat if you could? though a couple of us played the other day and just because we was talking in room they all lefted the table LMAO, but to answer your question no we don't cheat, and I'm sure some people do though but you won't find any here.

Lol me and a friend were cheating on pokerstarts play money once, just for kicks. I wouldn't do it in a real money game though.

I did catch a guy cheating in a live game the other day. Real amature stuff. Peaking at the bottom card, looking at peoples cards as he dealt. It was a sad display. It was only me my brother and my "friend" left in the game so I did a little "advantaged playing" of my own and me and my brother split the money. Two wrongs do make a right!

A bit harsh, isn't it? He didn't say "let's all cheat!" or "I would!"

I see players cheat in a Headsup freeroll by players telling each other what hands they have in the chatbox until they make it to the last table. You could report them but by the time the site's staff responds, the freeroll is over.
Would I cheat? I hate to say it but if it was a lot of money involved and I wouldn't get caught, I would consider it.

I guess I never answered the question, so here goes:

If I found a way to cheat undetected at a site, I'd immediately cash out all my money and go elsewhere. If I can do it, others can do it. If others can do it, they're doing it to me. If they're doing it to me, I'm in trouble.

No, I wouldn't cheat at online poker, because I wouldn't stay at a site where it's possible long enough for me to use the knowledge.

Honest enough for ya? :)

I'll betcha this non-poker player is doing research for a project, college, governmental, or otherwise. Why else would someone ask such a stupid question out in the open? These thread titles have the possibility of showing up on the user-specified "My Yahoo" RSS feeds. Dumb move. I vote for deletion.

Granted, this is not the best choice for an initial post. But the question is still of interest.

I say take the question at face value (as T1riel did) and ask yourself if you would ever cheat? Personally, I don't think I would for a couple reasons: 1) In a cash game I would have a tremendous fear of getting caught (yeah, I don't bluff much either), and 2) in a play money game I would find no fun in winning through cheating.

So, personally, I would love to make the money (cheating or not), but I am way to scared to cheat.

So, MrSticker, would you ever consider cheating? What if it was a game where you felt the players had cheated you before? Would you cheat to "get even"?

If it was for big money, I'd definitely think about it. It would just be too tempting, I think. It wouldn't take long for me to start feeling really bad about it, though, if I did start cheating, and then I'd stop cheating altogether.

Nope. My integrity means too much to me. Also, I love the sense of accomplishment too much. To win by cheating would mean nothing. Money or not.

Besides, look at what happened to JJProdigy & ZeeJustin. They're the "Bonds & Palmeiro" of online poker right now. No thanks. Not me.

I'm am completely with MrSticker on this one. In my opinion, a cheat is no better than a theif. I would not be able to sleep at night knowing I deliberately cheated someone.

As for Coryan's question regarding cheating to "get even"--that would mean nothing. It would be far more satisfying to beat them on my own merits and then rub it in afterwards.

Some of the poker books have indicated that most people that try to cheat do worse than decent poker players.
Collusion is the most common form of cheating online, and none of us would know that 2 of their opponents happen to know each other and are chatting on something like MSN. However, certain plays can then become suspicous, and it's the reason why there is software that will flag your account if you are regularly at the same table as another player, so that they can investigate whether there are any signs of collusion (e.g. folding when the colluding 'opponent' had a monster, or helping cap the betting with a weak hand). A less easy tactic to stamp down on is soft-playing - simply not crippling a friend who you're playing against, so that they have a better chance of doing well in the tournament.
In reality, while the folding to a better opponents hand saves a bet, it's a bet that would go to your friend, and it reduces pot odds and may encourage others to fold as well, costing your friend more than it saves. Helping cap the betting with a weak hand is I suspect am much less common approach, but that is probably the more profitable for the both of them put together. If the cheaters do not have a very solid understanding of poker in both pot odds and psychology, then there is a risk that their efforts to cheat will actually cost them money even if they do avoid being detected, so against the most likely forms of cheating online I don't worry too much, because those trying to cheat in general probably don't have the necessary poker experience to ensure it truly benefits them.
As for cheating myself, no - I've learned how to do false shuffles and the like in home game, and considered what strategies should genuinely give an advantage online, but despite that I haven't cheated, and don't plan to start - it's more been to reassure myself about chance of spotting cheating, knowing what to look out for. Since I'm making a profit anyway, I don't see the need to do things dishonestly.

I actually saw 2 people from the same location with similar names on Prima sitting next to each other, with the same buy-in amount, sitting out until another person came to the table ....They both played like they were the same person... I contacted the live help and they told me they basically didn't care...

ROFL. I guess this is a form of cheating because you have an advantage, not only against the cheaters, but against other players at the table. However, a part of me really likes that fact that the cheaters were busted and had no idea.

It reminds me of my trip to mexico...ah, that's a story for another time.

There are online cheaters, look at JJProdigy, playing 2 accounts and winning a $100000 tourney.

I have seen 1 person playing 2 hands in an Absolute tourney and I know Absolute is aware that this guy has multiple accounts.

Yet they don't seem to do anything about it.

well i dont know if there is a way to cheat or not.....it seems that there has to be a way somewhere.....but i do have a question for a pro i recently watched a video of.....its an online pro with his own tutoring website....in the video it was a $10 sng at party poker....about 10 hands into the video....i noticed i could see the cards of other players before the flop...then he makes a couple of clicks and says "its better when you cant see the cards"...so im not sure if its possible or if this was just a program that allowed to see the cards after the game was over and it was recorded....if i ever get to the bottom of it ill leet you know what i find out

I think cheating is what you make it, i do not cheat but at big live games when me and my friends are playing against kids that i do not trust we will play in a such a way that one of us wins and we split the money or make a deal, I just think, there is a way to cheat at everything it just is against most people morals but when your getting cheated sometimes you have to bend the rules a little.

I know a lot of people chat online. they do it over the phone and by IM. They even have programs that can read your hole cards. So, yes, people do cheat online. Would I do it? Hard to say, but I don't think so. 1- because I pride myself on learning more aspects of the game every day. I take too much pride in the competition of it. It would be tempting though cause there would be much profit. But also, think about the jail time. Not nice. I'm not gonna be Big bubba's bitch. :)
