Well I'm not too happy right now. It seems as though there is a player at my home game who has been swindling my friends. It also turns out that this same person set up my only royal flush ever, and he just told me he did that :(. Advice? My morale is pretty low right now

Yah I expelled him. Unfortunately some friends of mine tried to screw me also. So I cancelled my games all together. Quite a shame

He was setting the deck under the table and putting the card he needed on the top of the deck. We know because he ALWAYS hit the first card of the flop, never the second or third. He would burn a card in the very beginning of the round of acting instead of right before dealing the flop. So he would burn, shuffle the cards and put the card he needed on the top of the deck. So I think it is very clear he was cheating. Is that what it sounds like to u guys?

I don't think he had much to do with setting up your royal so I wouldn't worry about that, but how do you not see a guy cheating? I hope these weren't your friends. My advice would be to go to the casino.

He was a friend. Not anymore. He started out not obvious, and from game to game tested the limits of what he could get away with and we caught him. U can be sure he is not to be seen at one of my games ever.

The money is insignificant for me. However I was really feeling down about my poker game for the last couple months because he was getting so "lucky". At least I know I wasn't playing badly lol

Advice? Punch him in the face.

Lol at this. Definitely good advice.

Sad to hear this though.. Home games with the homies is fun. Me and my friends used to get a home game going 1-3 times a week with sometimes 9 people playing. We never really had any cheating going on.. We suspected it one time from one of our buddies but we couldnt prove it. Really kind of hard to prove unless you catch them in the act or they admit it...

One of my buddies every now and then would try to get away with saying he had a straight or a flush and not show his cards lol, everytime we would be like well.. flip em' over. He would and would show something other then what he said. Found it more funny then i did messed up lol.

EDIT: These must have not been that good of friends if they would cheat at your home game.. That is pretty shady and really shows what kind of person they are.

One thought is to mount a video camera right above the table, review it after the game, this should keep them from trying to cheat..

I dont think you would have to go that far.. Cheating is not something that is really easy to get away with, not that i have tried or anything. But if you just watched each player when it was there turn to deal and counted the cards every so often you should be able to spot a cheater, if there was one.. Would be kind of ridiculous if you had to watch for cheating in a friendly home game...

Yes it's really a shame. Cheaters never win in real life. I would think the cheating would ruin the satisfaction of winning

Well there would go any games I would throw, I might be subject to kick his ass and take all the money he had on him at the time I caught him cheating.

so...when he was shuffling he set aside a card from the deck then took the deck under the table to shuffle then put the 'burned' card back on top of the deck and dealt it to himself first?

doesnt sound like he's cheating, sounds like he was mocking you. if you let people do stuff lie that when they are shuffling then of course they will 'cheat'.
sounds like he was a cack handed 'cheat' at best. no way he set that royal flush up he is just making himself look cool, in a very misguided way. probably has aspirations to be a magician but lacks the skill or knowledge. does he happen to be a bit shy and socially akward?

in future make sure people all shuffle the same way:
wash them face down. then gather them into 2 halves. cards flat on the table, never cover the top of the deck, riffle shuffle only 2 times, before 'stripping' then riffle again before offering another player to cut.
when dealing keep the deck level and the top uncovered at all times, if you need to put it down then put a chip on top so the top card stays untouched.

Only burn a card when it needs to be done, not before hand as burning a card is a security measure.

plenty of videos and guides for dealers on the web if you need to know what a 'riffle shuffle' or a 'strip' is. could always ask a pro dealer in a casino too, they will show you how.

So your other friends as well as him were trying to screw you over?

It seems to me, that none of these guys are friend worthy so I'd try picking better "friends"

well better late than never, atleast you know now and the matter is under control, it could have been worse and it would hurt more if it were higher stakes poker.

for future reference ----if you catch someone cheating -- give them a private talk and let them know that for the rest of their lives the first thing people will think about when they see them --is that he cheats---and no matter what he does after that the stain cant be washed away..

people make bad decisions...give them a chance to mature into something better

Cards should NEVER leave the surface area of the table.

One time, early in my live career, I absently started to hold my hole cards in my lap to put chips out and I immediately got a very heavy hand on shoulder with a voice telling me to put the cards on the table. The 6' 4' 400 lb poker room manager.

I'm going to assume he's a card mechanic. If you going to play in live games. You should become a mechanic yourself. Not so you can cheat, but to make sure you're not cheated or, someone's not cheating at your home game. Though it should've been obvious right away, by the way the held the deck of cards.
