I've decided to take a break from actually playing poker and do some serious reading, watching and discussing the game.

Just wondered if anyone felt that this actually improved your game or if the only way to get better is playing constantly ?

Peace,

Dave x

It definitely can improve your game when you study the aspects and observe and then later try to implement what you have learned. Sometimes if you attempt to implement each little step it doesn't make as much sense as it does after learning all of the basics.

I would disagree, focusing on one aspect and adding it to your game focusing on practicing that part can be very good for your game and often the best way to go. You can ensure one aspect is solid and that you no longer need to focus on it before attacking the next weakness. Poker is about learning things to auto-pilot, then you can focus on the tricky things.

When you learn to drive, you don't get handed the keys and are asked to do a rally course, you check your mirrors, you learn to find the clutch. Then when you have that stuff down, you can move on to reversing round corners :)

it does help alot not to think about poker when on this break. It's help me alot of time when I go on a lossing streak and I come back fresh, and win more

yea i would say that you shouldnt do that. you need to have a mix of both. do some reading everyday but you also need put this studying into action. if you just read and dont play your gonna forget about things that you read about. but if you read then immediately put these techniques into practice they will become more instinctive.

Taking time off to study poker is a good idea, studying the game and observing could always work to your advantage. When you get back to poker, I wish you luck and hope to hear your game has improved. :)

Learning more is always wise. Taking a break might give you the distance to put into practice the new strategies you are learning in a fresher way.

It's always good to mix it up but like they say practice makes perfect. Can't win if you don't play. See ya in the game & Good Luck to you
