After scoring a nice $3632.65 in the $3.30 rebuy on stars I am now left to ponder what to do with the money. I am not sure yet, but I imagine I will be withdrawing around $1500 for the real world, definately no more than $2000. This will still leave me with a fairly sizable br.

It's very strange to go from being a 5nl reg to being rolled for 100nl. In fact, I sat down at a couple of 100nl tables just for a taster and found them surprisingly fishy :). Even given this though jumping up so many levels is bound to end in disaster so I figure I might go for a 50nl induction period (even here I'm very conscious of the money at stake). For this reasone I'm indecisive whether or not to leave myself technically rolled for 100nl (with >$2000) as this will inevitably end in temptation and disaster (I can foresee it...).

Then of course there is the fact that lately I've found cash games a complete grind (and not in a good way) and vowed to give tourneys a shot even though the variance is utterly painful. I'm not very good at managing money in general so any thoughts/advice about limits, what to do/not to do would be very much appreciated.

edit: I have had extensive 10nl experience in the past and a couple thou of 25nl.

Honestly - if you have been playing $5 I would only move to $10 for now - $25 at the most.

Leave some in and build it slowly. You are going to want to put some towards CC events, etc. Don't jump up too high too fast.

First of all congrats on the cash. 2nd place is ridiculous in a rebuy tourney that big, I hear you didn't rebuy or add on either so all the more power to you. Here is my suggestion though. Just because you are rolled for larger limits doesn't mean you have to play them. There is nothing wrong with working your way up from the bottom. Why not just play 25nl for a while till you get used to playing for a bit more money. Take your time and play your game and congrats again.

You are no where near rolled for $100NL, in my BR nit opinion. I don't play much ring, and even I have gone through 10x full buy-in loss sessions several time. But, that being said, I suck.

I would want 100x the max buy-in for whatever I was playing.

Jake play 25nl for 10-20k hands just to see how things are. Don't put too much pressure on that precious BR. Believe me it's precious and shouldn't be risked. How many table are you looking to play b/c that will also figure in your BRM.

Number of tables depends on what limit I think Jag. At 25nl I'd probs be 6-tabling or 9-tabling. Higher up maybe just quad tabling.

Then you prob already know this you have to factor this multitabling into your BRM. I'm quite conservative now, esp after my recent d/schwing, but you need to be looking for at least 50 BI's for that amount of tables. So 25nl is what I recommend, look at playing 20-40k hands then if your winning at a decent rate move up when you have the roll and confidence to do so. If you win at a rate of 5ptbb/100 then you will be rolled for 50nl at around 40k hands.

LOL now thats a sit and go.

Ok so you are taking out $1500 in winnings, leaving you with $2100.

Id say yeah do 50nl, gives you lots of breathing room.

Stick to 25NL, it's better to build your bankroll slowly than loosing a huge stack of what you have playing at 50NL. Good luck bro, wish I was as lucky as you!

Now I feel sad coz it was implied I won through luck :(.

I think the general opinion is a more conservative building up of br, so I've decided to take this advice and stick to 25nl for at least 10k. If anyone else has any ideas to add...:::

Any win of this magnitude requires luck. Even if you're the best player in the tournament, with that many people the odds of you even making the FT are hugely against you. Just look at the wsop and how the pros do. And that straight in the AQ vs. KJ hand basically was the difference between a low cash and 2nd place lol. But all the other top finishers got lucky at some point too, and even pros have to get lucky to win big tournaments.

The point is even if you play this twice a day for the next couple weeks odds are you won't do this well again. If you could expect to get this kind of win every week or so first off you'd have no reason to work in your life, just dedicate your life to playing the $3 re-buys on stars, and secondly you wouldn't have to worry about BRM. But you can't expect this frequently.

The thing that sets off bells in my head is this phrase: "I'm not very good at managing money in general" and "this will inevitably end in temptation and disaster (I can foresee it...)."

I would personally withdraw all but 1k. Then you're rolled for 50nl but if you feel you need to play some 25nl first you can do that as well. Winnings the major part of the battle, but BRM is extremely important as well. If you go and blow all your money at the $5/$10 tables that win means nothing anymore. If you honestly think you'd be tempted to play with most of that money, withdraw it ASAP. After playing at $5nl and previously doing 10nl, I'd probably try 20-30k hands at least at 25nl, make sure you're doing semi-well (depending on how many tables 4 BB/100 is really good and you should definitely be running over 3 BB/100 if you want to move up). Then if you think you're ready for it, jump into the 50nl tables.

But I cannot stress enough how horrible it would be for you to undervalue that money and tilt some of it off, thinking of it as bonus money. That money is currently yours and it doesn't matter how you got it. You now have a lot of money, think of the things you can buy with that much money. Make sure you understand the value of that money and that if/when you do hit 50nl you are working to get better and do your best to win rather than making stupid plays because you're playing with free money anyway.

About 18 months ago I had a few nice MTT wins, mainly $1850 on Stars and $1500 on Full Tilt. This was my first taste of a bankroll in the thousands, I instantly moved up in limits (I was playing STTs at the time) and lost $800 within weeks. After a little thought, looking around some forums and taking a little advise about the game, I decided that the rings was where my future was at.

It was some good advise that I got, and against the mainstream advise I decided to start at the bottom on stars, I cashed out two grand, went skiing :) And hit up the rings, starting at nl$5 (maybe you think im insane) and moved up as i beat each level, leaving myself with the minumium of ten thousand hands per level even if i had that level beaten (this was PER-TABLE, so 4 tabling a limit means playing 40K hands).

Not alone did I learn some very important concepts along the way, but the whole experience has made me a better player for it, I can play against the maniacs and against the nits. Remember some of the concepts that you learn on nl$10 helps immensly on nl$100.

Last weekend on the tables I met a very nice fellow, who sat at a nl$100 table, who bragged that he'd just won $500 in a $1 MTT, he was actually a very nice guy and each time he got stacked he said nh, nice call etc etc. He lost his $500 in under 150 hands, the sad thing is he didnt even play all that bad, he still lost it all though.

My advise. Take a week away from the tables, have a think. Cash out a grand or two and get yourself something slick so you know the value of your bankroll.

Play nl$10 or nl$25 for 20K hands or so.

Get a stockspoker sub.

Set yourself some very strict moving up guidlines and stick to them.

Oh and give yourself a good pat on the back.
