I'm just starting to get into poker, and was wondering if anyone had read any good books about poker theory and the statistics of hands. How to play a high pocket pair vs. AK or KQ. I love to play poker, but I dont want to lose all of my money. I would be very happy to be a break-even player. Any suggestions would be much appreciated ;)

There are a numerous great books out there. Try searching the forum and you will find multiple threads of late that discuss this at depth.

Also, as long as you're here, check out our Articles Section for a lot of great info as well.

One of the best book's I have read is partypoker Exposed lol. poker books all mainly tell you how to play. I think playing is mostly common sense. Don't play bad hands and bluff at the pot when other players are showing weakness. AK and QK and QQ JJ KK AA are all hands that should be played according to what position you are in. I've limped in with AK and was glad I didn't raise late position because all I had was ace high. Which did nothing for me. heads up it's usually safe to raise 5-10x bb to see if you will actually get any action if an A or K hits hope this has helped.

I either don't get this, or I strongly disagree with it.

Explain, please?

Sure I've limped in " just called the regular cost it is to play the hand" And when nothing came on the board I was happy I didn't pre-flop raise big and If an A or K comes on the board a nice check will get another person with there K or A to bet and you can then gladly re-raise or just smooth call and take them for alot more then suggesting you have a strong hand in the beginning ,

Hmmm. Well, that can work as a means of mixing up your play occasionally, Vasity, but you would be ill-advised to routinely play AK that way.

It is dangerous because it allows other players to limp in with weak hands and possibly hit some hidden monster.

For example, let`s say the flop falls Ace, Ten, Six. You bet big, confident that you are favourite with your Top Pair, Top Kicker. You get screwed because someone else at the table is holding Ten, Six - a hand he would almost certainly have folded had you raised.
