As the title states, I'm curious to know what fellow CC members thought of this book? I just read it for the 1st time ever personally (and I admit), I honestly found the book down right hilarious (that's just my take on it). While I did enjoy reading this book more so than most poker books, I didn't really find that it helped me figure what I wanted to know in terms of poker, yet the book for me helped me out in terms of knowing the poker "life-styles", and more so to do with poker "etiquettes" (I mean I already knew about it), but the book helped me to understand why these "etiquettes" are so good to use and get into rather than being an ass to needle players.

It also was good to figure out exactly what is an acceptable/achievable win rate in terms of "live" play, obviously these "live win-rates" would depend on alot on you but it gave me a generalization of what to expect.

Yet it really didn't really help me improve my over all thought processes in terms of playing poker, which begged me to ask the question, am I missing something in which I need to re-read the book again, and if so how can I now exactly what to look for?

Exactly what did you (if you read the book), learn from it, and how did you incorporate this into your game over all

I have read this book twice. I think this book is good for a change of pace. Like you mentioned it does not get into specific hand strategies. I think it helps more with bank roll management.

That was the first poker related book that i have read, my first impression with the book is that i got goose bombs on the dedication page, i remember showing it to my wife and that she start crying.

Book itself is a nice peek into a life of poker player away from the wpt cameras, but did it actually helped my poker game? i guess not... i might read it again my perspective of poker has changed drastically since then...
Would i recommend it? Yes but to someone who wants to have an inside look about poker, not the game theory, it definitely isn't a first choice if you want to start learning poker...

I read once a long time ago and I really liked because it's more enjoyable to read than the other poker books. I remember that the book taught me more about psychology of poker than the game itself.

I read it some years ago. It teaches very basic things, but from what I remember those things were pretty much all right. It's an easy read, enjoyable read.

I mainly skimmed through the book because there was so little on strategy. The book was more about the poker lifestyle. Maybe valuable to some people, but not what I was looking for.

Ya the book won't teach you how to win, but it will teach you how not to go broke.

There are some pretty critical skills highlighted in the book, ie it can be ok to play cards others might not like, manipulate your image, be nice to the fish, etc.. It is definitely worth a read if you are not looking for quantiitive analysis.

I would say that ace on the river didnt really help my game much at all.
I liked the booka nd find myself a collector of poker books and I really like barry G as a player bu it was really more a cashg game book if I remeber right and im a tournament player.
But barry G is pretty awesome.

It's been quite awhile since I read Ace on the River but it is one of my all time favs. It is full of wisdom on what it takes to survive in this game over the long haul. Barry G has the consummate professional approach to the game in my opinion.

A line that I love from that book is after Barry gets lucky in a pot against a recreational player. The rec player goes on to berate him. Barry replies with something along the lines of "You think that play was bad? Stick around awhile, I'll make far worse ones than that!" :D

My poker class used this book as a study item. The poker table manners were the most discussed items.
