So i'm thinking of buying a poker book to help with my studies and was wondering what you more experienced guys would recommend? I was thinking of getting The Mental Game Of Poker by Jared Tendler but then i also saw The Theory Of Poker by David Sklansky and maybe there's some other good ones that you'd recommend.. thoughts?

There are so many good books, that it would help us suggest one if we knew what you have already read, and where your game is at these days.

Also, are you a ring or tourney type?

i haven't read any poker books, i've studied a lot online and on the forum and i'm a winning player over a good sample size and a have a fairly good understanding of poker, i feel like my mental game is lacking, things like tilt and discipline are my main struggles that's why i'm leaning towards the mental game but i'm open to other opinions and suggestions, i play both ring and tourneys btw i just LOVE poker and want to harness as much knowledge as possible.

"Kill Everyone" is an excellent guide to the game. Include it in your poker library.

Large MTT's - Harrington on Hold'em

NLHE Cash: I personally feel that playing hands and participating in hand discussions on forums is going to help move your game forward better than any book will.

Pretty sure I saw another thread you posted in, and you're at uNL right now. Biggest thing you can work on is simply playing solid cards and working on lines to maximize value based on villain tendencies.

If you absolutely want me to give you a title, the two that come to mind I feel I gained good info from are:

Easy Game - Andrew Seidman
Small Stakes No Limit Hold'em - Ed Miller et al

The theory of Poker by Davis Sklansky are good for starters. Tournament tactics by Roy Rounders, is a fast read. Then “The Smarter Bet Guide to Poker”, Ace on the River and Doyle's brunsun “Supersystem“ are best for competitive poker.

Whatever you decide to get just keep in mind you should be looking for a book that will help you improve in your current level. There is no point on buying a book with strategies for 10k BI MTTs when you are playing $150 BIs

If you include all the HORSE games, then SUPER SYSTEM is a good book to have read. It is the biggest of all poker books, maybe not a book you want to lug around the rest of your life.. It is also basically old style, but the fundamentals in it are rich with info. I have thought many times thru many books, that all those authors of the other books assume you have been thru SS. And they then build on that.

For tourneys, Harrington is still a great book for fundamentals.

Each of those books is never done teaching. I have been thru SS 3 times, and HOH at least 5 times, and I swear each time is like I never opened them before.

I have a book from Susie Isaacs, something like 1000 tips. It also covers all the HORSE games. It's value is that it reminds me of stuff I already know. Stuff I have somehow repressed for weeks and need to get reminded of. I have been thru it 3-5 times also. Probably time to break that one out and stick it in the bathroom reading rack again.

Most poker books are good in the bathroom reading racks. They tend to have short sections covering specific topics, or maybe hands with some sort of specific info. If you are constipated, you will learn poker faster this way!

Disagree that HOH is extremely dated and while ok for fundamentals, large amounts of player pool assumptions are made implicitly. Winning poker tournaments one hand at a time is a far superior an more relevant series. But any theory rich texts like mathematics of poker or applications of no limit or even let there be range would be better

@duggs
Mhm, I will check it out in the future. I also enjoyed "Analytical No-Limit Hold'em: Crushing mid-stakes short-handed games" by Thomas Bakker. You probably know all this stuff, but if OP is interested in some theoretical aspects and 'range orientated thinking/work' he might give it a shot :)
