I used to play pretty much professionally years ago but want to play live since online poker sucks so bad now. I live in north carolina and I've been thinking of taking a bus to atlantic city but it'll cost me at least $200 bus fare and it seems like a hassle. I've seen home games being advertised online and I've heard of underground poker circuits and poker houses with high stakes games but it seems like those games will be filled with people that also love poker and will be much harder to win money against compared to a casino. Some advice would be very much appreciated I'm about to receive a lot of money and would like to be able to invest some in poker.

Move to Texas, then you can go over any state line and find casinos filled with cars from The great state of Texas, where our noble lawmakers legislate morality.

I'm in eastern nc so it would be easier to drive over 200 miles to the casino cruise in myrtle beach sc than to harrahs.

A lot of bars run poker tourneys, sit n go and even cash games, look around and ask and u will be surprised. Pool halls run poker games as well, or u can always start your own game. U can play with 5 or 6 guys and if u run it there is no rake so u don't have to worry about that cost, he'll u can throw in a small rake if u wanted to.

Starting your own game is always a great idea, if you have enough friends who are into poker and you can run the game properly. I would highly advise against collecting any sort of rake, time charge, or donation. In almost every state, games that take a rake are illegal. In many states (check your local laws), unraked games are not illegal. In some areas, legality may depend on the limits. But, I am not a lawyer and definitely not YOUR lawyer. Protect yourself by learning the laws for your state.

Even if any poker game is not legal in your state, you can be sure that taking a rake increases your chance of getting dealt with harshly if/when the law finds out.

How does online poker suck? Besides losing access to cash play on pokerstars nothing changed for me on black friday. Play everyday on several sites.

Personally I'd say check out Merge Network on Carbon or Aced or the Winning Network on BlackChip or America'sCardroom.

Merge has traffic and Winning has the fastest payouts.

Have you looked into just a regular bus and not a tour company having a poker trip? How about a train? Maybe you can search around for someone else in the same boat who you can ride share and split the cost of gas. Just giving you some ideas, hope you find what you're looking for.

Online poker was amazing on party poker and I used to win a lot of money playing tournaments on pokerstars but since black friday all the new sites have a lot of tight players and there doesn't seem to be as much easy money and I've heard casinos at 1/2 or 2/4 table you can win a lot of money apparently. I'll have to look for a cheap bus ride to myrtle beach for a casino cruise they have atlantic city seems like it would cost a lot.

Where are you in NC? I live in wilmington which is about an hour from Myrtle Beach. I don't know if your close but there are gambling boats right outside of Myrtle that go out to international waters and hold nightly holdem tourneys and cash games. Years ago they had shuttle service but I don't know if thats the case anymore or what all cities the shuttles service(if they even run anymore). I think the main one is called sun cruise or sun cruz something like that

Where and how do you find underground games? I've heard of them and used to know someone that was a dealer at one but that was in a different city.

Rake vs better play.

It takes time to find the right home games vs paying rake, hotel and bus at the casino.

You may wish to do both at first depending on how much time you want to spend doing it.

Here is a start for finding local poker groups.

https://www.meetup.com/topics/poker/us/nc/raleigh/

You have to network to find the best home games. Which means be nice-play nice and bring some snacks.
You never know who is at a poor game who happens to be your in to a great game.
Remember it will not be your play but your attitude that takes you were you want to go in home games.

Go to Vegas. Yes, it will cost you money, but you can do lots of other cool things while your there to, and that would make you feel less "behind". If you used to play professionally, then you have a good idea about the circuit. AC would be good too. I would look at the $200 as an investment,or get a few people to go with you and split the costs.
