Hey cardschat memebers!
I wanted to start a discussion about online tells. What do you guys Think are the most common and maybe not so common. Feel free to explain how any of these might incorporate into live play. I typically look for people taking a long time, but then again the could just be away from comp., min-raise, slow check, all in when pot is small, is all i can think of. What do you think?

Always play with the sound on, you've gotta listen carefully for how hard they click their mouse and figure out whether hard or soft means weak or strong.

Lots of tells around... yes speed is important (do they always auto fold and then suddenly hesitate?), any change in patterns..
Also some people talk up or down the chat depending... or suddenly shut up...
Watch out for multitablers like zach who are really not paying attention to the table action and just act when the are prompted to... if u r against multitablers check their action on other tables...
Also, over time, you can learn peoples response patterns and again, check for changes. A HUD is important for this.
I believe there is a thread on this already, look it up and add it to this, OP..

People who use the auto check/fold button can give you tells. A few times I was in a pot with someone and after the flop I checked and they insta checked because they had the auto check/fold button checked. I knew they were planning on folding the hand so after the turn I bet and they insta folded. Also the amount of time a person takes before betting is a good tell if you can figure out their patterns.

I wouldnt pay too much attention to how long it takes someone to call or bet. They can be playing 8 tables and have to take care of pocket Q's and late suited connectors at other tables before they get back to the action at your table.

They may just have a crappy connection. I had satellite internet for a while and it took me a lot more time to play just because of the connection speed.

after a flop, how quick they check, especially after the turn, usually means they have check marked to fold on any bet

betting increments and the amount of time they take to bet, as well as there position. Hell how can you even get a tell online anyway, someone could be stalling because theyre internet is lagging, and you could put them on a bluff becuase of it. Save for the position of their bet and the amount that they are betting i dont know what other tells there could possibly be.

Heres another one I do, from Steve Z:

"If you’re playing at a single table and one of your opponents is multi-tabling, you can bring up all the tables he’s sitting at and watch how he plays. If he suffers a bad beat on another table, it could affect the way he plays a hand at your table, and you can take advantage of it."

Tells are overrated. You do, however, learn a lot about other players by looking at

- How often they are in the pot
- How they bet different hands. For example, someone who limps with crap and raise with premium starting hands.
- How quickly they decide. For example, a bad insta-call is an indication of somebody without much sophistication. Generally, better players take longer to decide.
- How they bet position. For example, someone who always bluff in position can be trapped for a big stack.

Dont be misled by how long somebody takes. online poker allows multi tabling and very often the delay is because somebody is playing more than one table. While it is more difficult to spot tells online there are still many which you can look for. Watch out for guys who dont bet and then raise 3ish BB's. Pretty good chance they have got a good hand. Watch out for guys who bet every hand. Nobody can have a hand which is worth a bet every time. Watch out for guys check raising or call raising. It is harder on MTT's because of the table moving.

best way to check for tells if your really intrested is to take notes on players on your table on how they bet wen they have a certain hand...check check check bet etc ,,if u take notes while your playing ,not many players do ,,,,u will pik up bettin patterns on players,,,so wen your not in a hand watch the action ,,ie checkin bettin raising on the players in the hand ,,,,bettin patterns are hard to pik up unless u take notes

I dont know if anyones noticed this but some players that are trying to bluff usually tend to bet really fast after you check to them trying to scare you out.
Ive actually done this before and noticed others doing it too.

If they wait a long time and then call/check they usually have a weak hand. If they wait and then raise, they usually have a stronger hand. If they chat too much they don't care about their hands, they just want to socialize and are normally weak players with no balls and usually fold to big bets.

Slow player? OR new ?

Hey luckytokenz
about your speculation of slow playing and more, maybe a specific player is not sure of himself and has to think through before he makes his play, maybe a new player?

Betting patterns, VPIP, aggression (or lack), how often and what they showdown. These things (and others) form an interlocking set of info that will give you what you need to know to win. All the other immediate stuff is really sorta teeny.

Unless you're playing with some tricking players, you can catch most amateurs with their better patterns. Lots of people have predispositioned betting patterns for certain situations when they stay at one level for too long. I'm guilty, to an extent.
