I believe that poker is like a school, especially if you play right and think. Makes you a little bit wiser cause you need to think what may others have in hand when they raise or goes all in. So yes I think it makes you wiser!

Any time you challenge your brain, it is good.

Use it or lose it.

then why are there so many players that are soooooooooo dumb??

it is a mind builder, if you are good and play a way where you actually care what happens......some do not, and playing does not help them

of poker is for the strong mentally because it is a game that plays with your calmness and your perseverance, I hear it's suitable for persons over 50 years, but may be so

Not sure it makes you smarter, but definitely teaches patience, how to read people and how to make decisions under pressure.

I do not believe that anyone can become smarter by playing poker , you can only become more crazy , and of course no money on the account:)

It depends how you approach poker. Yes if poker is approached in the right way, it certainly can make you smarter.

However that depends how you approach it. are you just playing bingo like poker waiting for a good hand without much thought? most players play like this combined with some simple concepts they learned from reading an article.

are you breaking down differential equations? linear inequalities? range merging? because the latter if you understand what your doing will likely help you become more adapt. the level of maths applicable to poker can go well into post graduate level. unfortunately a lot of players today are devising what they have learned from the results of computer programing made by some very smart people. When in reality most of the users have little understanding of the math behind these results. One poker professional player i know literally got an E at GCSE maths and never took it further. he acts like a genius but he just learned how to use a computer program and memorized the results into rang merging etc. sure that can improve your memory etc but it wont make much difference to your analytical ability.

I mean a good counter question would be can going to the gym make you stronger? if you follow a good diet the right weight program and do it properly absolutely. if you just show up lift the smallest weights with a half ass attitude ponder round the gym then wonder home, your probably not going to get get stronger.

anything you can use your brain for, can make you smarter. However as said time and time again in many places the brain is very much like a muscle use it or lose it. you grow smarter or stronger by pushing yourself to the absolute limit until that limit becomes easy then going for the next limit etc.

eventually people will reach there peaks at which point no amount of extra work will get you there. However very few people ever reach there full intellectual capacity.

you get stronger/smarter by pushing yourself to the extreme. Not by just showing up.

I believe that people over 50 should not play poker just because the nervous system is not made of iron, they may not survive the next streak

Success doesn't come to you…you go to it. The great Breakthrough in your life comes when you realize it that you can learn anything you need to learn to accomplish any goal that you set for yourself. This means there are no limits on what you can be, have or do.

Very interesting topic! I think poker could be a good way for seniors to keep their minds stimulated, and to encourage social interaction as well. I'm not sure if it could be linked to preventing atherosclerosis, as its causes seem to be more physiologically based, but I think poker could be a great intervention for other conditions or to improve general wellbeing :)

I think that with the right approach it "does". I mean, if u play poker drinking, smoking, watching tv and paying attention at 'n' other stuff, and by time to time clicking to pay some hand, it won't work. But when u take it serious, and try to analyze all the situation etc, it will use ur brain.

Not necessarily u'll become smarter, but at least u're keeping ur mind working

I absolutely agree with you. When I first played poker i went all in with hands AQ or A 7 and etc. There will be a moment u need to fold even if you have AA

There's a general opinion that our brain is like a muscle (it works better if you keep using it a lot), but I don't know if that is something that simple. If you read 500 books about poker, not necessarily you are going to be a great player, but it sures help. It's just that sometimes it's not only the "ammount" of use, your brain must be able to create neural associations and some people are just better than others. I'm not going fully darwinian here, but we can see that some people just can't make some connections and associations that for other are pretty obvious. Sometimes it' like a gift, I think.

Like any game, it will help you gain many personal traits that you can adapt to your life. Patience, self-control, humility, respect, and rage control (when someone fishes out on the river! ;) )

Since "atherosclerosis" is a build up of plaque in your blood stream, I think a person over 50 would be better off eating well and exercising rather than sitting down for hours playing poker. Memory exercises and probably poker could help reduce the risk of dementia in later in life though.
