It seems every bar now host a league that gives the novice poker player a chance at winning a wsop, wpt, package. Yes it is a long shot if you were to go this way. But does playing in a bar league come close to preparing a person to play in an event like that. Does anyone know someone that has decided to turn pro because they won a package, or anyone who has cashed in one of these events. Just curious on peoples opinion on this.

i know a local bar here does something like this. but those idiots for some reason at the end of the year end up chopping the 10k pot up instead of playing it out for a seat at the tournament.... i might have to go play it sometime and play the damn thing out and show em how its done.

You mean, does playing in a bar league prepare you for playing in a WSOP / WPT type event?

In terms of your game, I'd say no: the average bar player is, well, a bar player - half the table will be drunk and either minbets or shoves will be the norm.

If you're a solid online player and you're just looking for some experience handling cards and chips, or if you need to brush up on the rules and conventions of live play, then they could have some value I guess.

Mostly they're just for fun though. I've won a few over here for prizes like gift vouchers worth a few hundred bucks, or a trophy or something.

There is a local bar league and they play 2 nights a week at a bar I frequent. The level of play I have seen fro all but a very few players is abysmal. Many are looking for any opportunity that they can find to "go all in". Aside from the additional practice, saying this would prepare you for the WSOP is like saying playing in the local bar softball league would prepare one to play in the major league. There is no comparison when it comes to the level of skill and the competition.

Our local bar leagues are pretty awful. Its an all-in donkfest, as they can sign up for the the game as soon as they're out. I think they're great for the bar/restaurant owners, tho; nothing drums up business like a bunch of people playing free poker. LOL. Go, have fun support your local businessman/woman. But good heavens, don't think you'll learn a thing about good playing. make it a social thing and you'll have a good time.

I participated in a bar league one "season". It wasn't too bad until the championship. There were supposed to be set rules for who qualified in the event, then the event begins and there was a lady at my table who I know didn't qualify (plus she was terrible). After that I decided not to play in them any more.
