Hello, My name is Jack and I am a...bankroll Nazi.
This problem developed in me some time ago and it is the one thing I strongly believe is affecting my play. I have this sick problem of constantly checking my cashier and if I loose a BI even when i get sucked out on or whateva I feel as though I am the worst player in the world and do not know why i bother. The next day come back have a winning day and its all good again!
This needs to stop! I need the help of other CC members to contribute to get this disease out of my system. It haunts me every session and if im on a loosing session i begin to play catch up poker and we all know that is taking 22 steps in the wrong direction.
I understand that everytime i sit at a table I am not going to win....But for some reason 10% of my brain will not accept that fact causing me to be the monster of a bankroll nazi i have become....

Help cc members... please haha

You seem to know what you need to know. You've already told yourself most of what I would tell you. The only thing I might add is to not be results oriented, which is what I used to tell a good friend of mine. She would get knocked out late in a tourney and be like "whatever" when you told her she played well. She might have flopped top two and had someone shove all-in on the turn with a gut shot and hit. That's not something you can really help. Just because some chump caught a miracle card doesn't mean that you played bad.

Also, you have to let the money go. I know we all play for money, and that's how we keep track our success. Several years ago, when I first started playing pool tournaments, a friend of mine told me that once I paid the entry fee, that was no longer my money and that I had to let it go. The only reason that I shouldn't be able to do that is if I couldn't afford to lose it, and therefore shouldn't be using it to enter tournaments.

Maybe a way to think of it is as an investment. That what you spend on one tourney is the price you pay for to gain experience and increase your skill. It takes time for investments to pay off.

I can recommend you Dusty Schmidt, he has some good tips in his books and interviews. Especially: don´t look into your cashier ! Ok it´s easier said than done. You already know, that you cannot always be a winner in cash games. In tourneys its even worse, a winner will 90 % be a loser...and hes still winning.

i look at my cashier all the time too, esp, if im losing.its like a curse. i think that it must be good to look at it cause if you dont and just focus on the game what happens if suddenly you have fallen beyond a certain limit which means you have to go to a lower table or your close to going busto. ?

I am similar to what you describe i think. I have like obsessive compulsive disorder with checking where my account is at, and if I reach a certain amount and then drop below it, Im not happy until I get back to it. Dont think I can change, just the way I am. One thing that eases it though, is if Im drinking beer. I lose the obsessive compulsive thing and I am just happy to play poker. I am just a lot happier period when downing good beer. I don't both drink and play often though, and I wouldn't want to start doing it often. Come to think of it, one thing that makes it worse is when I eat too much sugar, cookies or candy or whatever, I got a real problem with that.

ok heres what you do, and I aint promisin it will work but just try it and see what happens. take all your change and put it in your left pocket. next tie your left shoe in a double knot. now take a ball cap and put it on your head backwards. next take a golf tee and stick it behind your left ear. now take a moment and think about what a fool you look like. realize how foolish this irrational fear is, just forget about it and play poker!

emotions

emotions and poker should not mix but they do sometimes. I am remined of the story i saw on here Phill Ivey wokeup won 2.7 million$ and went back to bed. He has learned to shut most of his emotions off at the poker table..

As we have seen in some reply's, emotions and poker should not mix, but beyond poker is a game of skill and emotions.
We just have to learn to control both.

Good luck ;)

When I lose considerable money - which of course is highly relative to each individual - I usually just write it off as entertainment for the evening. I mean, I'm just playing low stakes, so the most I ever lose and consider as a large loss is maybe $10 - so I just bring a sandwich to lunch the next day and don't eat out at work.

This is my way of justifying my losses and I think it helps me in the wrong. Sometimes it's hard to separate ourselves from the money, even then once it's in the pot it's not longer "ours". So what I do is simply try to find a justifiable raise to excuse my losses, otherwise I'd always be on tilt after a losing session and that's no good.

Maybe the first thing to do is reconsider the stakes your playing at. If you're having an overall winning "career" of poker, than just keep that in mind, and like I do just write off your losses as a fun evening you had to pay for.

I agree, I think it's good that you have bankroll awareness. The trick is to compartmentalize the emotions while you play. This effects most players to varying degrees myself included.

Except in rare cases, there's no magic elixir that will instantly change your attitude. Most people can desensitize to some degree over time, but the rates can vary widely. Basically, the more you see that what you fear doesn't happen, the less scary it becomes.

Read "The Mental Game of Poker", by Jared Tendlers, I'll guarantee it will fix the problem
