Maybe it was against the rules to say bad beat?

Well thats not fair at all. Just because they said "bad beat" they don't get their jackpot. I would've been kinda mad in this situation because it should have been your pot, but because you said "bad beat", the pot isn't yours. That must of been frustrating, and I would have sued them also. I sure wouldn't go to that casino if they do things like that. How unfair!

Hilarious... seems to me like the bad beat jackpot was just a way to make people think there's less luck involved, cause they can get the jackpot if someone sucked out on them..as if the casino wouldn't earn enough money anyways

It's that way in any casino you can not talk about the hand or the bad beat while the hand is going on they will forfeit the jackpot. At mountaineer they have a bad beat jackpot and if its hit they shut the table down and it takes about 1 - 1 1/2 hours before they pay out this is so they can go to the eye in the sky and see if any talk happened while the hand was in progress.

that sux, and its more common than you think... Ultimate bet has refused there jack pot a few times also... I would be so mad if i was apart of that, thats why its better to be good and just win over time then to hope for jack pots, thats why i like playing .25 .50 because a lot of players there play super tight and wait for a jack pot to hit... which happens like once a month or few months

I play live at Harrah's New Orleans and we've never been told we can't talk about the jackpot during a hand. Of course, you can't talk about a hand in play or the board--but I've never heard anyone ever say that a jackpot would be forfeit if the word "jackpot" was uttered. Ridiculous IMO.

That stinks, I bet that all the dealers are traind to say that they heard someone say "Bad Beat" or something else that will void the jackpot hand.

Not all casinos are like that with their bad beat jackpots... a friend of mine hit the bad beat jackpot at Harrah's in Kansas City last year... took home $58K

I hope those guys get their jackpot.

To kill a jackpot because someone utters the phrase "bad beat" is ridiculous. I would never play at a table that has such a rule. But if it does have such a rule and it's properly publicized, then the players have only themselves to blame for playing there.

It's odd that the casino operator wasn't afraid of the bad publicity they'd get just when they're trying to get approval for an expansion. It suggests to me they couldn't run a lemonade stand properly.

I haven't had bad beat experience in a live casino, but some of the poker books I have read mention that many casinos ban talking about a bad beat while the hand is live.

The rule is in place to stop collusion.

For example:

3 tight wads in the pot, likely to have big pairs or A/K'ish hands.
Villain1 has T/T
Flop is A/A/K

Villain 1 might mention that this is a bad beat pot in the hopes that he'd get a free turn and river in a pot that he'd otherwise fold from. If he hits his Ten, everyone at the table gets $ so they're inclined to check it down.
This is collusion and works against every other table in the card room.

This story is very unfortunate.

1. The guys was drunk and in a written statement says he doesn't remember saying it.

2. Even if he did, it was after the 2nd queen fell and this was a limit game so it was going to showdown with max betting anyways.

3. The manager at the time admits the rules were not clear, but later acts like everyone(al least the main 2) knew exactly what the rules were.

4. In an appeal the council should have realized the guy was drunk and ruled for the players who didn't do anything wrong.

The dealers will usually tell you the casino won't tell say anything til the time comes.

The dealers at Mountaineer won't way anything to the floor because they will usually get a nice tip, however they will tell you not to talk about it so it doesn't get forfieted

It's to prevent what Savage said below.

I haven't had bad beat experience in a live casino, but some of the poker books I have read mention that many casinos ban talking about a bad beat while the hand is live.

The rule is in place to stop collusion.

This is collusion and works against every other table in the card room.
Another example is someone may not understand the Badbeat Jackpot which I found to be true quite often, they don't understand how it works. But lets say 2 players are in the pot one has AK and another player has JJ and the board is J J A A A if the player with Jacks really thinks the other player has the Ace then he may fold (although unlikey) but if the players say something to the effect of wow if he has a Ace and you have JJ that would win the bad beat jackpot and now make the JJ call. GRANTED THIS AN EXTREME AND UNLIKELY INSTANCE BUT YOU NEVER KNOW.

The other thing is most places require a certain amount to be in the pot in order for it to be valid.

This is a rule in Atlantic City, it's the same as the rules for Fight Club: YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT THE BAD BEAT! It's stupid to enforce it in this case because it wasn't collusion, it was just a off handed comment.

I do remember one night when a guy's girlfriend who wasn't playing was sitting at the table, squeezed in beside him. One of the players mentioned that it could void the bad beat as you can't have extra people sitting at the table. The dealer asked her to just move back a bit and she did, but then this dumb chick ended up right back at the table five minutes later. We asked her again, she moved again and then crept back in again. How ****ing stupid can you be?

You should know the rules and obey them because you have to assume that, if somebody had a chance to screw you out of money, they would.

This is wild--I've played at casinos where when there is a possibility of a bad beat everyone at the table talks about it, even the dealer! Matter of fact, the last time that happened the dealer even called the floor over to watch. Alas, the magic jackpot combo did not hit.

Bottom line is I think we are all behooved to find out the rules wherever we play, as buck said.
