Could someone please explain exactly what a bad beat is, I have read a few varying versions, and I am a little confused, it seems self explanatory, but I'm not sure.

A bad beat is when you get your money in as a big favorite and the other guy draws out on you to win.

But to make it more complex, if the other guy has to be making a bad move. That is, if he's a 3:1 dog but the pot would net him 4:1 on his money, he's priced into the hand, so he was not making a bad move.

Now, a cold deck is when two people have a hand that they can safely assume is the best hand, so they (usually) suffer a big loss. for example, if I have 8/8 and you have 9/9 and the flop is 8/9/A, I'm going to lose a lot of money because of the cold deck.

A/A vs K/K match ups are a prime example of a cold deck as well. But if the K/K beats the A/A, that's a bad beat.

I would definitely agree with that, so would you consider if I had AA and AKK flopped, I went all in, and he had KK, that would be a bad beat right? just wondered, this has happened, and it really sucked.

Daxter gives the most accurate picture... but it is not the most COMMON definition.

This is the most COMMON definition:

A "bad beat" is when I don't understand why I lost a hand I think I should have won.

I think i have 2 examples

Me and another player all in pre flop both turn over QQ, He makes a flush.

Pre flop i get JJ, raise it up and one caller.
Board 5QJ
Great i think, and bet out, he re raises and i 3 bet. He pushes all in and I call,
I put him on JQ/KQ/AQ
He slows AQ. Little party in my head

Turn A
River A

Exit room.
