I remember when poker use to be a bad word and people played in cellars.

yes with so much money in poker now its not an embarrassment anymore. tv and tournaments really helped too

Think it is the association with gambling that gives it the black eye. Also the colorful past with cheating and the backrooms or bar with cowboys. With it's popularity on TV, it has taking the tarnish some what. It has been some what distinguished from Casino as far as gambling.

@TeUnit either you may be very young or... I don´t know what. Growing up in New Jersey only the Gangsters (mobsters) or othe negative cliched groups played in the cellars or private clubs. One thing poker was illegal. Some stories of how people traded thier house on a pot. and so on....When someone would say poker it involved usually Guns Drugs or Alcohol along with deeds lost to homes boats or cars, and in even some cases where some who lost beat or killed the opponent or thierselves. Sorry for the negative scene. I use to also play in the private clubs and everyone is different I never lost more than what I could afford, when I won good I left before the others were too drunk, and never became aggressive physically against others because of my loss.

I come from Va, and right along with the moonshine, poker was a house hold word around my uncles. They were iron workers and made big money for back then and Fri and Sat. nights someone would not come out so good and someone would be living it up next day. My uncle Ray was a big winner in those. But don't remember many fights or gun play at his house, maybe because he was a tough farm boy that took no crap and could stop any of it at his house if it started.

It still has a bad name, in some circles. Particularly housewives, when their husband comes home with no money, and gambled away the rent! LOL

It was also the housewives the caused the downfall of poker stars and the rest of them. Problem gamblers were gambling away their hole checks, their wives can not control them, so they all called in the department of justice. So the government set them up, and took them down. Instead of trying to find a solution to the problem, of the problem gamblers. They just shut the faucet of! I knew it was the beginning of the end, when I seen it on Dr. Phil show.

I grew up playing poker around Norton, Kansas. My dad would take me to poker games starting when I was nine. We would drive to a farm house and when everyone had arrived tractors would be used to close the farm road. Great fun great food and safe.

I think it still happens beyond the massification and acceptance, there are still many basements where it is played illegally and it is a somewhat dark environment

I have been playing poker for no more than 4-5 years. But I remember that 15-20 years ago, gambling was not considered the best occupation.

I don't think poker has had a bad reputation long ago, it seems to me that all gambling games are generally frowned upon.

Generally, the money can change the meaning of everything, words, history, game, whatever else is in the 'life'... and who denies it, just can't accept the clearly visible, basic fact, probably because she/he is involved in it, and it does not fit into the narrative what they fake, sell, show.

Yes, I remember playing poker in secret with friends on the lake shore. Parents scolded us for this and we always hid so that they would not see us. It was interesting childhood 50 years ago.

Everything has changed, including poker. Ahota is very easy to find broadcasts of poker games both on TV and on the internet. Poker has changed for the good of all
