Then he will have to pay taxes on that as well - why didn't just do what he said he was going to do right back when he won it

Now the lawyers are gonna get a slice as well and he's probably blown any chance of nicely paid sponsorship deals (Raymer & Hachem etc).

Didn't like him the first time i saw him - don't like him now :)

Just remember he made this deal early on in the tournament. It is not like he did this right before the final table.

What are the odds that he would go that far. Plus, 3-4 mill is still not a bad take home paycheck.

Interesting read, though.

Don't misunderstand what they're saying. Jamie Gold was allowed to take his first $6M out very soon after winning the wsop. The other $6M was held in escrow by Harrah's pending the litigation. The settlement has not been disclosed, but since it was settled, you can be nearly certain that they agreed to some division of the remaining $6M. If the other guy wouldn't settle for any less that the entire half, it would have gone to trial. Likelihood is that they split the $6M right in half giving $3M each ($9M in total for Jamie Gold).

Jamie Gold - Different perspective

I think alot of people have this wack view of Jamie Gold so as always I have to be the Devil's advocate I guess . Seriously though, I have heard a couple of his interview and read a few things other pro's had to say about Jamie Gold. It seems to me there are alot of fingers pointed at Mark Seif for instigating this whole ordeal. Obviously I don't know what the truth is, but my opinion is that Jamie Gold is genuinely nice and this was an issue of pride. I think this should be a good leson no matter what about making promises to people you barely know. Whether Jamie backed out after realizing what he'd promised or if the guy really just went to far too quickly... it was just a bad idea and he shouldn't have said it.
My 2 cents.

Actually I think the lesson is if you are going to make a promise of any sort regarding anything (money, stock, car title, whatever), spell out the details in a written agreement of some sort including the measurable terms of what a complete deal looks like. Both sign it along with at least one witness. Believe it or not (opposed to TV dramas and gossip rags) contract of that simple of a nature are almost always enforced by the courts.

I was watching Jamie on High Stakes last night and I can't believe this guy won the WSOP. It gives me hope. His doesn't or at least didn't last night seem to have any idea of what his table image was. He was constantly playing rags and betting them hard but was getting called off every time. Then when he does get a hand, he would limp, after all that set up. It was a good episode though.

Saw it last night too. My favorite moment in the show was where he went up against Doyle with A4 (?) off against Doyle's AQ, and was betting out on the river because he had ace high w/two Kings on the board. He tried to justify that he had to bet w/ace high!!! Hilarious. Gives me hope too!!

Devil's advocate pt 2

Ok I don't even really know how to defend this guy anymore to some of you. I understand the few hands you've seen him play on TV may create an image of his play style, but I have my own opinion... based on different interviews and such. First off let's go to the WSOP... when Rob V won in 2002 he only had to luckbox through 631 players... If you honestly think you can luck out through over 8000 people get the chip lead halfway through and keep it.... then I don't think you really believe poker is a game of skill. Second, when Jamie did High Stakes he actually started playing timid. The producers decided it wasn't really what they wanted out of him so he started playing every hand for the ratings < I mean is this really so hard to believe with the way networks and the entertainment industry care only about ratings=money >. I mean look at Poker After Dark. Don't tell me none of you thought it was way ackward when Shana asked Jamie to be more entertaining and talkative right at the table. Norman Chad AND Howard Lederer both have said that Jamie played amazing poker at the WSOP. Let's reference Gus Hansen for a second... Everyone thinks he is a maniac from TV, but then why do pro's defend him in interviews for playing a close to perfect mathmatical game?
Ok sidetracked.... All I'm saying is give him some time before you step on his name like that. His dad died shortly after he won the WSOP, he's admitted he's nowhere near the level of some pro's and his biggest asset is his potential and natural instincts, and last but not least is the fact he was being sued for 6 million <until you know the story it would be ignorant for you OR me to assume he was right or wrong in that case>. All this and he still has a day job as a producer for now. I'm not trying to represent Jamie here or make him seem better than he is, but none of us REALLY know him or how he plays and I just don't like single sided views. Draw your own conclusions good or bad, but make sure they are informed somewhat at least.
One last thing... how does the idea of a guy lucking his way out to the biggest poker tourney give you hope? I personally enjoy poker for the skill aspect and it doesn't give me hope at all to know the skills I have been working so hard to build don't mean anything cause I saw a few suckout hands out of over 5000 hands played. If any of you can win a field of over 8000 people without having to suckout cause you ALWAYS have the best hand... well I consider that very lucky in it's own right.
Just so you know I'm not trying to stir up trouble. I hope i was able to offer a different yet understandable perspective to the mix.

Isaac,
Time will tell where Jamie Gold fits in the poker universe. Obviously people are very down on him based on the few times they've seen him on TV. He hasn't played on TV the way a Raymer or Hachem has and that's why people have formulated their opinions on him.

What we do know about him is that he hasn't cashed in a major tournament since the ME, despite playing in quite a few of them. He was one of the chip leaders at the recent Borgata Poker Classic on Day 2 of the event, yet got eliminated before the end of the day, eventually going out on A8o vs. JJ.

We'll see what he does at the 2007 WSOP.

Just a question...

Where do you get quite a few from? I really don't count high stakes or poker after dark to be big tourneys and on top of that I still believe he was playing to the tv audience for ratings on those. I know about the most recent tourney, but I can't seem to find a site where it mentions any of the tourneys he was in. If he really has bombed out of alot of tourneys im still gonna give him leeway since his dad was dying and it happened in December sometime. I just watched the WSOP again and I'm not sure why people think he lucked out so much. It seem when I watch it that he really was in the zone for the psychology of it. I'm not sure if I can even post this, but there is a nice interview with him on "The Circuit". Give it a listen.... I think he's fairly humble. Ok this is the last I'm gonna post defending someone im not so sure about myself lol. Not many people would do that for me.

So one other one? I just think maybe using "quite a few" as a description is either an exaggeration or maybe your view of quite a few is different from mine. Anyhow I'm going to go back to the original topic and once again remind people DON'T MAKE PROMISES TO PEOPLE YOU DON'T REALLY KNOW <or even people you do know for that matter> WITH OUT GIVING IT SOME THOUGHT BEFORE HAND. Not like any of us need to be reminded, but I know on a smaller scale I've made promises I didn't really think out and failed to keep my end of it. Even if it only ends up giving you a guilty concience thats still a fairly bad thing for you if you know how guilt and stress can affect you. hmmm really off the topic of poker here....
Ummmmm Always play within your bankroll and fold if your not getting the proper odds to draw to whatever.... ok there :D
