I've been doing some experimenting, and I've consistently played better poker if I smoke a bit of pot before a live session. Somehow it makes me more perceptive and focused, my reads get a lot better and I seem to be a lot more patient.

Anyone have similar/different experiences?

I don't smoke anymore, but I did in the first couple years of playing online. I think it can help block out other distractions like having the tv on while playing and stuff. You can just sort of zone in on the table you're playing. I would say it helps reads, but doesn't necessarily help with your own decisions.

I was in a live tourney (charity event) and a friend gave me just a small hit on the break and I was STONED!

Ended up in second place that night, you figure it out.
Makes me scared to think about it

I smoke anytime i play online because it helps me not snap call dead pots which im known to do. It calms you down when your in a big tourny and nearing the bubble. wouldn't suggest it in a live game because although it gives you little to no tell on your hands (lol), depending on how gone you are, its sometimes hard to really pay attention to other people's tells/tend to make dumb calls just to try and get a good laugh when you win with a donk hand. to each his own tho.

I haven't smoked in years but when I did & played poker @ same time, it made me too 'zombie like' & I sometimes past out @ the computer HaHa. It didn't help me concentrate more or anything like that, in other words, it didn't help my game or make it worse. It all depends on the individual from what I've learned throughout the years.

It helps me to concentrate and focus when I am multi tabling, and honestly it does put me in the zone. I've always said some people should be able to smoke, and others should never be allowed to touch the stuff. I say the same thing about alcohol.

To each their own.

yeah I get the same, smoking doesnt help your game but it doesnt hurt it really either... i find im a poker robot anyway so the zombie effect is continual.

12 tabling while high really isnt fun though as your motor skills and eye/hand coordination suffer from it, some people have told me they play better but I think they are lying.

By my experience with poker and weed(hash actually), The main effect is of course it makes the playing more enjoyable and funny. Sometimes it made me figure really good reads and play well with more confidence and bluffs at the right time, but many times it made me tilt badly.

Worst I've done is played poker while sort of tired, which may or may not be worse than being stoned, but if you can't think straight and you are playing for money, you need to think about what you are doing.

Lol at thread.

I would say the improvement/lack thereof is negligible. Weed may calm you down but as Monoxide pointed out, multitabling really isn't that fun

Funny you mention that. I consider short-term memory to be a valuable asset to playing poker, so I haven't tried it while stoned. I have, however, been curious lately whether Ritalin might be beneficial to the game?

My mind is a racing one. Gears are constantly grinding, running a mile a minute.

By smoking pot it slows down my mind enough to keep all the gears on one thing: the game.

In the zone, like someone else mentioned. However I could see it only being benificial to those that have racing/over analyzing thought process.

When the brain is always in overdrive, its best to keep it grinding on one thing at a time.

I always make sure I have a nugget to smoke before any game.

Its not game breaking, but I prefer it.

I don't smoke pot, but I doubt it makes you a better player. If it did there would be alot more people doing it

I am not sure about playing stoned as I have never played stoned.

I gave up getting high years ago.

I have, however, played drunk from time to time and once I managed to win a $22 buyin to a mini FTOPS event for 60c!!

I am not at all recommending that you play drunk, but sometimes it does work.

Interesting feedback.

I have tried about 4-5 sessions while stoned now, and I consistently do better.

I always have a racing mind so it helps me block out all the background processes, so to speak, and really focus on the game.

Just had a very good $1800+ weekend while doing some "experimenting" (live play - $1/$2).
