Had my first dabble at it today, and its a really strange game, but quite intriguing when you get into it... I dont know how I did it, but I managed to finish in the top 88 of a freeroll on pokerstars, winning a seat in a $2k tournie on Saturday..

Anyone able to offer any tips, advice, hints or whatever ?

I wrote some random crap about it a while ago.

But most of that is speaking to cash game play. Tournaments are a little different. Play on early streets are more important, and you want to be tighter starting off & looser as the antes get big.

I love playing Razz because you can go from a potentially great hand to absolute garbage in no time at all..

I end up screaming at the computer when things dont go my way...

Razz is just a fun game and not one I would be throwing alot of money into..

88 isn't bad out of what 10000, i qualified once on poker stars and got an entry, it's not easy. i like poker stars and there is where you should go if you want a real challenge, especially the freerolls. congrats and hope you win!! ;)

I would like to play something else than NL Holdem. I have tried Omaha after reading the rules but I still find it hard to understand.

Can you recommend what game to start up with (beside holdem).....is one variation of poker sort of the basics of other variations...so if I learn this one it will be easier to learn some of the other kinds of poker

I don't mind playing stud, but sometimes it just feels like it's all luck. I mean you see the other people's up cards, and all you can do is draw and hope for the best. And if you don't make your hand, you bet on every street for nothing.

Most of my BR was built on stud, it has better ROI and less variance than NLHE, for me at least.
But you have to know what you are doing. I suggest Roy West's book for beginner/intermediate players.

But if you want to try something else than holdem - is stud the right choise?

or is one of the other kinds of poker more suitable if you only have played holdem before?

Holdem players make me laugh, a bit. I've been playing for decades, holdem for three years. I know and play every game out there. Stud is my bread an butter. Don't know what to tell you. People who only know holdem might be better off playing 52 pickup.
Seriously, stud is the main alternative for you, there are lots of games around, Omaha another (but it is similar to holdem X2).

Holdem got me into playing poker but games like Omaha/ hi/lo and stud/ hi/lo have kept me here! Alot of dead money in those games.
