They say when you play poker you should move up stakes in cash games or tournaments as it tests how good you really are too. But just wondered is they anyone that just stays on microstakes and makes a living from it? And do you play tournaments or cash games and for how long ect.

I think it's possible if you want to make 40-50k a year. I am currently trying to make a run at it part time, and if I prove the results can be there for full time, I'm pulling up anchor at work and going. I know I need a roll of probably 10-15k with 40k in savings for life expenses to get through all the down swings.

Why would you need a roll of 10 to 15k if your playing mircostakes 5 to 10 pound tournaments? I thought you would only need a roll of 500 to a 1000 to play those kind of tournaments!

I have a family of 6. My wife and I, plus 4 children. I aim to be playing everything from $11 to $50 tourneys when I quit work. I need to be able to make at least as much as I do at work, 70k, while having more time to devote to family as that is one of the selling points for my wife. I am simply starting in the micros. Also, once I quit work, I will not be able to reload a bankroll. I am lucky enough to own everything I have, house, land, 2 almost new vehicles etc yet I still have probably 2k / month in bills. I guess for me it is just the comfort of having a large roll because I have large responsibilities. May not be optimum for everyone, but for me, it is.

In poker it is a bit complicated, unfortunately most of them live in dreams and illusion. online poker has changed a lot, nowadays there are few that can overcome the mics without taking great risks.

Anyway, if it is your dream, dedicate yourself, study. Have a good game!

What you mean taking great risks? I,am talking about just sticking to microstakes so no taking great risks! I,am not all of a sudden going to enter the wsop main event for 10 grand! If that's what you mean

Steve how are you going to live without money to get started if you go fulltime. To me that means no other work. Got to have a roll to start.

it's certainly possible. In my early days of online poker i played nothing more than $10+1 mtts (the norm being $1.10-$3.30's ..... without a shadow of a doubt thi was when i was most successful and in control of BRM....i'd play sats to bigger events with a few good outcomes, but absolutely for sure it is possible to make a living if your discipline is good (mine wasn't at times) ;)

I do not play on tables with cash, I do not like these tables. I can play only rarely in tournaments with a small buy-in.

I got about a 500 roll spread out in 888 poker and different I poker sites. So I will just play no more then 5 euro or dollar tourneys and satellites to play the 10 or 20 or even 50 ones as long as it don,t cost over 5 euros to enter the satellites! I think with 888 I will just play the 3 dollar tourneys and the 1 dollar 36 runner ones.

Yeah BRM and tilt issues are a problem! So what you think made your discipline go out of the window you think? Was it bad beats? Was it family issues ect? Also how many hours did you play a day and how many days a week and did you stick to a time schedule?

Do not move up a stake until you have increased your bankroll by 50x the maximum buy-in of the cash games you're playing or 90-100x of the tournaments you're buying into.

Tournaments involve more swings, so you should be more cautious with them as downswings and upswings due to a little bit of luck should be more taken into account than with cash games.

At least at low stakes you can make good money, as shown by Brian "bfizz11" Fite, the self proclaimed "king of low stakes". He plays $2.50 up to $22 turbo mtts and mt-sngs. Also streams for pokerstars and his project Turbokings. Lower than that i think it is possible to make good pocket money, not more.
