Hi all, My name is Kenny, I am kind of new to the poker communitie. Just wanted to start a thread on these new gadgets I have been hearing about. I would like to know if they are really worth getting? If so what kind should I get and is it really beneficial for a newby. I have heard they get really complicated to use and was wondering if anybody really uses them or is it something that they just want you to buy. Any input would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

That's a cool program there. There was one I found at pokertips.org but you have to type in the cards like Ac Ad. Then type the community cards in the same fashion. I'm too lazy for that.

Kenny, I suppose you are talking about those that you open up while you are playing and it will tell you whether to call, raise, or fold, or tell you the odds of you making your straight or flush? They are useless if you know how to count your outs and you understand the poker hands. If you are on the flop and you have a gutshot straight draw and a flush draw then you have 12 outs or a 48% chance that you will win the hand by the river. If the turn is blank then you have a 24% chance of winning the hand on the river. It's Phil Gordon's rule of 4 and 2. If you are on the flop multiply your outs by 4 and thats the percentage you will win. If you are on the turn then multiply your outs by 2.

Thanks Egon, that was all the info I needed. I have come to the conclusion that I really do not need one. But I did like the calculater that analyzes your own hands. I know I have some major leaks in my game, maybe one of these gadgets can help me spot them before I bleed to death;) thanks again

Thanks Marklar. And yes I was talking about those kinds of calculators. I will not get one now. Hey by the way ....do you use your name Marklar on any poker sites? Your name sounds really familiar.

There are other tools out there that aren't necessarily "calculators." If you're OK with downloading a program to use on your PC rather than a web-version, I recommend PokerStove to figure out equity and odds.

Then there are programs such as PokerTracker and PokerAce (or GameTime+) that can make quite a big difference in how you play the game. But if you're just now starting out, I think you should focus more on learning the game and less on the toys that surround it, at least in terms of PokerTracker; having a program that analyzes your stats and hands is not as useful if you're improving and making big changes a lot (which you're bound to do in the beginning).

What kind of games do you play?

Thanks for the reply.... I definately agree with you...I suppose I will be making major changes in my game....not suppose ...more like a definate if I ever want to be a winning player instead of a losing player. I mostly like to play NL holdem. I play in a lot of tournaments.....In the 3$ to 20$ range. I also do a lot of sit and go's when I am on a time crunch. I also am starting to play the 10/25cent ring games. Would greatly appreciate any advice. Thanks again

Yeah I go by Marklar_22 on Fulltilt and play in a wide range of buyins. Mainly $1/$2 NL Holdem and PL Omaha but I've been doing alot of Sit n Goes lately.
